School Participation
Latinos In Action (LIA) offers an asset-based approach to
bridging the graduation and opportunity gap for Latino
students, working from within the educational system to
create positive change. Our program operates as a year-long
elective course taught by a highly-qualified teacher at the
middle school, junior high, and high school level. The end
goal of everything we do is to empower Latino youth to
lead and strengthen their communities through college and
career readiness. We accomplish this by focusing on four
pillars: leveraging personal and cultural assets, excelling in
education, serving the community, and developing
leadership skills.
College
Preparedness

In order to be able to get into LIA, there

are a list of requirements you must need
in order to be able to participate.
Outside Of Class

All LIA students participate in

weekly literacy tutoring to
young students.
Leadership Conference

LIA host a yearly leadership conference

that is a couple hours long. During this
conference there is a lot that goes on.
From dances from different cultures and
places to special keynote speaker brought
in to encourage these youth to continue
their education. There is also a couple
workshops your school is able to attend in
which help you with different focuses in
your life.
Symbolic interactionism &
LIA
LIA ties into sociology as a whole and incorporates
symbolic interactionism by using symbols to help
students identify the club and what it is. The logo
for LIA itself is a pattern of youth growing up until
they have reached graduation. This is a way it
represents this.
