 Wine grapes first came to
California via Mexico.

 1920 – The Prohibition


amendment – went into
effect.

 1960 – California had 256


wineries, and by 1980, it had
almost double to - 508.

 Nearly 3 quarter - the size of
France.

 The production in California


alone is on third larger than
Australia.

 If California were a separate


country, it would be the World’s
fourth largest Wine producer.

than 2,600 wineries.

 4,75,000 acres of vineyards in


2007, a growth of 43 percent since
late 1980s.

 Today 14.5 million tourists visit

 Today almost every California
wine comes from the juice of a
single dominant grape variety –
and that grape variety is named on
the wine label.

 In most cases, the name of the


grape variety, is the name of the
wine.

 These aromas comes from


oak or wine making process

Sauvignon Blanc
 8 percent of California’s White
Wine production.

 Second most popular domestic


white wine varietal.

 Citrus, pear, herbal and


vegetable aromas.

 No oak aging, therefore lacking –


smoky, toasty and vanilla like
aromas.

Cabernet Sauvignon
 Represents 23 percent of
California’s red wine production.

 Most planted red wine grape in


California.

 Capable of aging for a few years.

 Aromas of Blackberries, Black


currants, often toasty, smoky,
vanilla from oak.

Zinfandel
 Majority of them are not
red wines but sweetish pink
wines.

 White Zinfandel is one


of the most popular types of
wine in California.

 It emerged in early 1970s


and became a big hit.

Zinfandel
 Zinfandel / Primitivo :: California
contribution to the world of fine wine since
1975

Unlike Bordeaux is for Cabernet Sauvignon,


Burgundy for Chardonnay & Pinot Noir,
Northern Rhone for Syrah, similarly California
is for Zinfandel.

 Also grown in Australia, South Africa and


South of France.

Merlot
 Merlot grape is still
California’s third red grape
variety, after Cabernet
Sauvignon and Zinfandel.

 Aromas and flavors of


plums, other dark fruits,
sometimes tea or chocolate.

 Light in body and has less


tannin than the Cabernet

Pinot Noir
 California’s Pinot Noir are
extremely popular and rare. Full
bodied and high in alcohol.

 Does not do well in warm


conditions, abundance of fruity
aromas – red berries,
blackberries, cherries, spiciness
from oak.

 Sometimes blended with Syrah

Syrah / Siraz
 Originated in Australia, and
the popularity of Australian
Shirazes in the U.S. motivated
many Californian winemakers.

 Full of berry flavors:


sometimes black pepper, earthy
notes or smoked meaty flavors.

 Syrah is also part of blended


wines such as – ‘Rhône Style

French Colombard

 California’s number two grape –
