PREREQUISITE

Understudies should have comprehensive knowledge on concepts

of Elementary Engineering Physics, Statics and Mathematics,

Solid Mechanics.

Civil Engineering Department

OBJECTIVES

1. To introduce to students the analysis concepts, analysis methods

and analysis techniques for processing load/force related data over
determinate structures.

2. To develop amongst understudies the skills to formulate &

interpret the solutions from hand calculations.
3. To develop an ability in the students to efficiently apply various
techniques, methods in problem solving.
4. To introduce the students to concept of global and local
structural stability theory for determinate structures.

Type of arches

Analysis of three hinged arch
• In the case of three-hinged arch, we have
three hinges: two at the support and
• one at the crown thus making it statically
determinate structure. Consider a three
• hinged arch subjected to a concentrated force
P as shown in Fig

Continued…

• There are four reaction components in the three-

hinged arch. One more equation is required in
addition to three equations of static equilibrium for
evaluating the four reaction components.
• Taking moment about the hinge of all the forces
acting on either side of the hinge can set up the
required equation. Taking moment of all the forces
about hinge A, yields
