GADGETS, AS ONE OF THE BOOMING TECHNOLOGIES HAVE A VERY HUGE IMPACT IN
OUR SOCIETY, ESPECIALLY IN STUDENTS WHO USE IT EVERY DAY AS A MEAN OF LEARNING.
THE USE OF GADGETS IN SCHOOLS HAS OPENED UP A NEW PATH OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING.
HOWEVER, IT MAY ALSO HAVE DISADVANTAGES AS IT HAS ADVANTAGES. IT PLAYS A GREAT
ROLE IN DEVELOPING EVERYONE’S FUTURE AND PROFESSIONAL CAREER. GADGET IS
BECOMING A MAJOR PART OF THE WORLD TODAY. IT HAS DEVELOPED AND BECOME MORE
CENTRAL TO LEARNING. IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ARE
CONSIDERED THE MOST IMPORTANT CORE COURSES ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN
STEM STRAND. MOREOVER, LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE REQUIRES A
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND LOGICAL COMPREHENSION. THUS, GADGETS HEAVILY
AFFECT THE LEARNING OF STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE.
INTERNATIONALLY, SPECIFICALLY IN JAPAN, TECHNOLOGIES ARE KNOWN
PRODUCTS SINCE JAPAN IS A HIGH-TECH COUNTRY. STUDENTS IN JAPAN TEND TO USE
GADGETS AS A MEANS OF SURVIVAL FOR THEM TO LIVE BECAUSE GADGETS BECAME PART
OF THEIR EVERYDAY MOVEMENT. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN RIDING A TRAIN, THEY USE A
CERTAIN GADGET OR CARD FOR PAYMENT AND OTHER TRANSACTIONS. ON THE OTHER
HAND, STUDY SHOWS THAT EXCESSIVE USE OF MOBILE PHONES CAUSES STUDENTS TO
CHANGE THEIR SLEEPING HABITS AND STAY UP LATE, EDUCATION MINISTRY RESEARCH
PUBLISHED ON 2015. IN TOHOKU UNIVERSITY, 53.5 PERCENT OF SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS
HABITUALLY SLEEP UNTIL AFTER MIDNIGHT BECAUSE OF USING MOBILE PHONE.
• IN THE PHILIPPINE EDUCATION SYSTEM, MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE FORMED PART OF THE CORE
AREAS OF BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM. ACCORDING TO IMAM (2016) FOR THE LAST DECADE, THE
QUALITY OF PHILIPPINE EDUCATION WAS PUT INTO A BIG QUESTION DUE TO POOR PERFORMANCE OF
STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TESTS BOTH LOCAL AND ABROAD. THE INITIAL RESULT OF
CURRENT EFFORTS OF THE GOVERNMENT BY ADOPTING K-12 CURRICULUM DIDN’T DO MUCH TO CHANGE
THE STATUS QUO. SINCE PHILIPPINES IS A DEVELOPING COUNTRY, IT IS RELEVANT TO EXAMINE SOME OF
THE STUDIES ON E-LEARNING IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. IN A STUDY CONDUCTED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF
ILOILO, THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE RESPONDENTS' STUDY HABITS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
WERE TO A HIGH EXTENT INFLUENCED BY SOCIAL NETWORKING PLATFORMS. MOST LIKELY THAT THIS
HIGH INFLUENCE MAY HAVE BEEN RESULT OF EASY ACCESS TO AND BROUGHT BY THE ACCESSIBILITY OF
GADGETS, SUCH AS; CELLPHONE AND LAPTOPS.
IN DAVAO REGION, USING OF GADGETS AS A METHOD OF LEARNING IS WIDELY KNOWN, FOR SUCH
DIFFERENT SCHOOLS IN DAVAO CITY IS AN ISO STANDARD CERTIFIED. A KNOWN UNIVERSITY IN DAVAO
CITY HAS BEEN USING AN E-LEARNING STRATEGY; IT IS A STUDY METHOD IN WHICH STUDENTS USUALLY
USE GADGETS FOR LEARNING. USING OF GADGETS IN THE SAID UNIVERSITY HAS A HUGE IMPACT TO ITS
EXCELLENCIES. THUS, A RESULT OF PROFESSIONAL WORKERS IN ITS FIELDS. HOWEVER, THE MAIN PROBLEM
OF IT AS A STUDENT IS BEING ADDICTED TO GAMES THAT COME FROM THE GADGETS. ONLINE ADDICTION
AFFECTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE SO AS THE USER'S HEALTH (SALVERON,2017).
• E-LEARNING IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION IS THE TREND THAT IS ALREADY ADOPTED AS AN AID TO
CLASSROOM DELIVERY (GALY, ET AL. 2011). ON THE CONTRARY, IT IS ALSO BEING USED FOR
SATISFACTION FROM DIFFERENT PLATFORMS, SUCH AS; GAMES, SOCIAL MEDIA AND ETC. USING OF
GADGETS IN SCHOOL MAY HAVE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ESPECIALLY IN STUDYING
MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE WHICH REQUIRES CRITICAL AND LOGICAL THINKING SKILLS. THIS STUDY
AIMS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF USING GADGETS OF STEM STUDENTS TOWARDS STUDYING MAJOR
SUBJECTS; SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS.
• THE USE OF GADGETS IN THE CLASSROOM HAS THE BENEFIT OF INCREASING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
AND ACHIEVEMENT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF BOTH THE STUDENTS AND THE EDUCATORS. BY ADDING
TECHNOLOGY CONCEPT IN THE CLASSROOM, STUDENTS CAN UNDERSTAND COMPLEX TERMS WHICH
WILL THEN INCREASE COMPETENCE.
