Food Product
  a substance that can be used or prepared for use as
food
  means any product that is grown, prepared,

manufactured, provided, served or sold and that is


primarily intended for human consumption and
nourishment.

 Food label is any tag, brand, mark, pictorial or other
descriptive matter, written, stencilled, marked,
embossed or impressed on, or attached to, a container
of food

Introduction
 Food labeling is the primary means of
communication between the producer and seller of
food on one hand, and the purchaser and consumer on
the other.
 Food labeling includes any written, printed or graphic

matter that is present on the label, accompanies the


food, or is displayed near the food, including that for
the purpose of promoting its sale or disposal.

 Food labeling can provide consumers with the information
they need and desire to make food choices.
 Food labelling tells consumers about:
1. The qualities of a product
2. The appropriate use of the product
3. The benefits of the product
4. Possible risks from the product
5. Where and how a product is produced

Purpose of food labelling
Food labeling is designed to protect the health and
well being of consumers
It allows them to:
 know what ingredients are in the food
 determine the relative amounts of each ingredient
 Compare the price per unit volume or weight of

similar products
 Determine if nutrients have been added or removed

from the base food (e.g. enriched, reduced fat)

Purpose of food labelling
 Basic product information:- provide consumers with
information about their food and helping them to make
informed decisions about which food to buy
 Health and nutritional safety:-

1. To promote and protect public health by providing accurate


nutritional information
2. To examine foods for potential allergens, additives, or
ingredients that they wish to avoid
 Marketing and advertising:- an instrument for fair marketing

and product promotion

Nutrition facts label
 On the nutrition facts label,
manufacturers are required to
provide information on certain
nutrients.
 The mandatory nutrients are
total calories, calories from fat,
total fat, saturated fat, trans fat,
cholesterol, sodium, total
carbohydrates, dietary fiber,
sugars, protein, vitamin A,
vitamin C, calcium and iron

Nutrient Content Claims
 Nutrient content claims is a nutrition claim that describe
the level of nutrient contained in a food
 Words and phrases that may be used to describe the amount

of a nutrient in a food, but does not tell exactly how much


 Nutrient content include
o Low Fat
o Sugar Free
o Good Source of Calcium
o Low Sodium or Reduced Sodium
o With No Added Sugar
o High Fiber
o High Protein

 These claims need to meet
certain criteria.
 For example, food with a
'good source of calcium'
claim  needs to contain at
least the amount of calcium
specified in the Standard.

Health Claims
 Health claims are about the relationship between a
food and health effects
 Describe how a food or food component such as fat,

calcium, iron, or fiber relates to a disease or health


related condition
 All health claims must be supported by scientific

evidence
 It must be complete, truthful and not misleading

 Example of a Health Claim:- "Diets low in sodium


may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, a disease
associated with many factors"
 Not a Health Claim:- "fruits and vegetables

contribute to good dietary health" This is not a health


claim because no assertion is made about the reduced
risk of a disease or health condition. Instead, this
statement would simply be called 'dietary guidance’

General requirement in a food labeling
As per the Nepal food Packaging and Labeling Regulation,
2073
 Language to be used on food item labels

 Lot number and batch number should be mentioned in

packaged food items container label


 Blend materials and additive used in food should be

mentioned
 Claiming ingredients on the label of food items

 Criteria to be followed while importing food items

  Name of the edible item should be be clearly marked on the
main area that customers can see.
  Edible items that could cause allergy should be mentioned
 Get approval for level of edible items
 Identity and proof of business identity can be mentioned on
food item packages.
  Indicate Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.
 Mandatory labeling on edible items
 Manufacturing date of food items and expiry date should be
clearly mentioned
 Identity and proof of business identity can be mentioned on
food item packages

Food Regulations, 1970
Food labeling Requirements in Nepal
1. No packed food shall be sold or kept for sale unless and until
a label is put on the wrapper of container of that food
specifying the following fact or description:
 Description of the food

 Name and address of the entrepreneur

 Label shall specify the real name of a food

 Net weight and measurement of the packed food

 Color or a preservative added food shall indicate the sign or

symbol in a label
 Batch number, date of production and expiry date.

2. The description to be specified in a label pursuant to sub-
rule(1) shall be in the Nepali or English language. The
description may also be specified in another language, in
addition to these two languages, if one so wishes.
3. Where a preservative is added to a food, its label shall not
contain words such as "pure", "chokho", "bisuddha" and
"sudda" or another description mentioned in such label shall
not contain any false or misleading claim or sign or symbol.
4. A retailer of packed food shall not be required to put on
the label as referred to in sub-rule (1) to sell it after opening
the packet.

5.The label of a food claimed to contain vitamins, minerals or
other nutritional substances shall specify the matters required
to be specified under sub-rules (1), (2) and (3)
6.Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-rule (5), it shall not
be required to put a label on the following packed food
 Fruits or green leaves kept fresh through the use of gas or
cold storage or freezing or any other provision
 Milk in liquid state other than condensed milk
 Whole egg
 Various kind of fishes , meat other than the fish or food
containing meat sealed in a can or bottle

7. A person who has a duty to act in accordance with this
rule shall not overwrite, alter or deface or erase the
label put in accordance with this Regulation

Food act 1966 and Food rules 1970
 Food act 1966, which has been amended several
times, is the primary legislation governing regulation
of food safety in Nepal
 The act and rules are continuously being amended as

an attempt to comply with international standards and


guidelines

Public health importance of food labelling
 It is a important public health tool to promote a balance diet
and enhancing the public health.
 Provide information about ingredients and the nutrition values
 Raise the awareness of people regarding their diet
 Motivate people to eat healthier
 Protect the consumer by providing correct information based
on diet, cost and food additives
 Crucial for allergy sufferers
 Prevent food items from misbranding and mislabelling
 Unhealthy product may vanish from the market

 Help consumers to compare food products more easily,
determine the nutritional value of foods and better manage
special diets
 Provide Nutrition/Dietary Advice:- Eating a diet high in
saturated fat, salt and sugar can result in several health
problems. These include:
 High Blood Pressure
 Obesity
 Heart disease
 Control nutrition-related health problems including obesity,
diabetes and metabolic syndrome which have a marked
impact on modern society
