Santos Classroom #2
Age group/ grade level: Using technology in high school.
What is technology? Why is it important in schools?
● Technology: Tools and materials used by humans to solve problems and change the
environment; technology also refers to computers, the internet, and the digital
devices used by teachers and students for learning. - The course textbook.
● Why is technology important in high schools?: Technology is important in high
schools because not only does it help teachers to be able to come up with creative
activities and assignments for students but it also allows teachers to be able to assign
and explain the assignments for outside of the regular school day. It also allows
students to be able to work on assignments outside of their regular class time and this
means even more learning can be happening. Teachers can assign online reading,
book projects, slide show projects and more. It teaches students in high school
responsibility by having certain devices and more.
The first form of technology that I feel is essential:
Laptops/chromebooks.
● A laptop is a lightweight, portable computer according to the course textbook.
● “A Chromebook is a laptop or tablet running the Linux -based Chrome OS as its operating system.
Chromebooks are primarily used to perform a variety of tasks using the Google Chrome browser,
with most applications and data residing in the cloud rather than on the machine itself. All
Chromebooks released since late 2017 can also run Android apps.” -wiki
● Why?: Chromebooks/ Laptops are important to have because they are what we see used for one-to-
one computing. They are devices that students are able to use at both home and school. They allow
students to conduct their own research using databases, the internet, and things like e-books. They
allow students to do zoom calls, or contact the teacher in another way through things like their
school email. They allow students to save their work and go back to it or submit it into google
classroom. Laptops allows teachers to create the different assignments using different content,
different forms like slides, fill in rubrics, papers, surveys, online quizzes and class discussions.
Laptops/Chromebooks:
The second form of technology: Projectors
● Projectors are defined as “ an object that is used to project rays of light, especially
an apparatus with a system of lenses for projecting slides or film onto a screen.”
according to google.
● Why?: Projector are important forms of technology for teachers to have access to at
all different grade levels. They allow teachers to display things like PowerPoint
presentations that they have created for their students or they allow the students to
display presentation projects that they have created. This is especially seen helpful in
classes like a public speaking or oral comm. Class because students are practicing
public speaking skills and presenting people with information and slide shows can be
used as their props. They allow teachers to share videos and to do things like have
review games for the whole class to participate in. They are a help to teachers and
students in a variety of different ways so I would say their purpose is to display for
the whole class.
Projector:
The third form of technology: A surround sound system and microphone combination.

● A surround system is defined as “an array of movie theater speakers, or the collective components of a home
entertainment system, as speakers and an audio receiver, delivering audio from different channels of a
soundtrack to convey directional sound, typically used to enhance the immersive experience of watching
entertainment on a screen.” according to dictionary.com.
● A microphone is defined as “ an instrument for converting sound waves into electrical energy variations
which may then be amplified, transmitted, or recorded.” according to google.
● Why?: Surround sound systems and microphones are important to have in the high school classroom setting
because high school class sizes tend to be larger than most middle school and elementary school classes.
With even more kids being in the classroom it can be even harder to gain their attention, it means that the
sound needs to stretch and reach even students who are sitting in the way back of the room. When students
are presenting things then this kind of sound system pair with a microphone can help them be heard by both
the teacher for grading purposes and the other students because students are not trained like teachers are to
speak in front of classes. The ones that I have seen in LPS are especially helpful because there are ones that
hang around the teachers neck and so teachers are able to do other things with their hands like type, flip
through slides, write on the board or demonstrate different things to students.
Microphone and Surround Sound System:
The fourth form of technology: Ipads.
● According to wiki “ iPad is a line of tablet computers designed, developed and marketed by
Apple Inc., which run the iOS and iPadOS mobile operating systems.”
● Why?: ipads are good devices to have because in a variety of different high school classes
purposes can be found for them. In my spanish class when I was in high school we used them to
record phrases that we said in spanish for an assessment that was graded by our teacher. This
allowed for our teacher to listen back to them. When I was in high school they were also used
for short skits that we had to write and perform for things like our health class where we talked
about how to handle different situations that we were places in, or for classes like oral comm. so
that yet again the teacher was able to listen back to the speech and grade up on it. Our teachers
used them to write down comments while assessing us.
● Teachers also used them for things like showing parents at parent teacher conferences how we
averaged in the class on our assessment and test scores. Showed parents examples of the work
that we were doing. Used them to show parents how to complete different things that the school
needed from them like online forms and how to purchase or cap and gowns and just different
things that had to do with our schooling.
iPads:
The fifth form of technology that I would use: Printer.
● A printer is defined as “a machine for printing text or pictures onto paper, especially one linked to a computer.” by
google.
● Why?: In high school there were many times that some of the teacher that hand not gone out and purchased their own
printers for their classrooms, had to waste come class time leaving the room to go print sheets for a couple students
because they were out of sheets and had printed a few too short or by having to take the entire class to a computer lab
or the library to print different things that they needed for their projects.
● These devices are also needed because teachers often like to keep record on how students are doing and share this with
the students using a physically hand out that they can look at themselves. I have seen teacher print grades and have
students share how they are doing with their parents and have their parents sign the form for their high school class.
This helped parents be aware of their student and in turn they pushed their student to do better. The student also got a
reality check because many did not check grades in the online format and so they did not even know how they were
doing. Then they realized and realized how close to the end they were getting and felt the urgency to do what they
needed to in order to improve their grades. This meant students staying after school to complete assignments which
teachers like math teachers reprinted for them to complete again another reason I would have a printer.
Printer:
The sixth form of technology that I would have: is actually a few different apps.

● The first app that I would require my students to use is google docs, or microsoft word. These apps allow
student to be able to type up different papers, allow them to do things like rubrics that they fill in
themselves, allow them to download and see grading rubrics, allow them to write speeches, and take
notes on their devices.
● The second would be PowerPoint or Prezi. The reason that these are necessary is because they allow
student to create presentations in creative ways to display their work to me as their teacher and their
other classmates so that they are able to learn from one another and from this can come class discussions.
● The third thing that I would have my students use would be something like google classroom or canvas
(depending on what the district is using) and the reason for this is because it is a forum that allows them
to easily access all their different assignments in one place and see if they have been grades/submitted.
They can see if they are missing things, resources posted for them, announcements and other classmates
postings in certain ways.
Apps:
Apps continued/ other websites that I would have them use:
● Another thing that I would have my students use is canva.com which is a place where they
can create different things like brochure, handout out, resumes and more. This will allow
my students to creatively display their work, and for classes like Take Charge where they
are required to learn how to create a resume a website like this could come in real handy.
● Another thing that I would have my students use is zoom, I believe even if they are not
completely online students that zoom can be very helpful for students to use and if it is still
allowed then I will be using it in my teaching because it allows students to have more
access to their teachers as well as it allows parents to more easily meet with teachers since
not many get the time to drive to meet with teachers and discuss their different concerns
for their child.
