INTRODUCTION

Through all ages philosophers have been occupied with the


immense questions and seemingly unsolvable problems related to the
quality of human life.
In the Danish Quality of Life Survey where they asked
thousands of people about their quality life.
• How did you feel now?
• How content are you with your life?
• How happy are you?
• Did you feel your needs were fulfilled?
How is your quality of life on a
scale of one to ten?
DEFINING THE QUALITY OF LIFE

• The World Health Organization defines Quality of Life as


“individuals” perception of their position in life in the
context of the culture and value systems in which they live
and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and
concerns”. (WHO 1997)

• It is a broad ranging concept affected in a complex way by


the person’s physical health, psychological state, level of
independence, social relationships, personal beliefs and their
relationship to salient features of their environment

• It is the extent to which a population enjoys the benefits of its wealth


• Abrahams (1973) – quality of life as the degree of satisfaction or
dissatisfaction felt by people with various aspects of their lives.
• Andrews (1974) – the extent to which pleasure and satisfaction
characterize human existence.
• Campbell (1976)Andrew and Whithey, 1976, quality of life concerns the
individual person’s experience of his/her own life and life situation, with
quality of life reflecting the individual well-being.

• Quality of life is the general well- being of people and societies. It is the standard of happiness, comfort,
and health that a person or group of people experience.

For example, People who love sports may feel that their quality of life has suffered if local facilities close
down.

Some people say quality of life is about wealth and owning things, while others may define it in terms of
physical, mental and emotional well- being.
QUALITY OF LIFE - HAPPINESS

• The World Happiness Report ranks 149 countries according to how happy they are. It also ranks
117 countries according to the happiness of their immigrants.
• The report ranks Finland as the happiest country in the world . (for the 4 th row). The next of the
top ten are European countries and Philippines ranked 61st. The least happy country is
Afghanistan.

• The world happiness Report shows that standard of living and happiness are closely related. The
happiest countries in the world also have the highest standard of living.
QUALITY OF LIFE - HAPPINESS

• Happiness is another and more prominent aspect of the quality


of life.
• Happiness involves our entire existence.
• When we are happy, every fiber in us hums to the right tune.
• Happy people are radiant.
WHAT MAKES US HAPPY?

• We become happy when our life succeeds.


• When our visions and big dreams coming true
• Love – brings happiness to our lives
• Healthy relationships with friends ,family and significant others
• Money
• Happiness results only when our chosen values are not that free to choose our
heart or soul, with our deeper natures as human beings.
The American psychologist Abraham Maslow concluded in the 1960s that human has
four basic needs:
• needs related to the body (heat, food, shelter)
• Social needs for genuine relations to others
• Needs for being useful
• Need to actualize oneself
Therefore, the idea of hierarchy or a pyramid of needs was introduced, in which you
start with the bodily needs and end up with the need for self actualization.
SELF- REALIZATION

• Self Realization – covers deeper and more comprehensive aspects of the


quality of life. To us it is more fundamental and closer to the soul than the
notion of needs fulfillment.
• It says more precisely that life is about the creation and realization of
something that issues from a person’s innermost-depth the heart or the
essence of existence.
• The number one enemy of self realization of something is resignation or the
process in which dream our dreams smaller as we downsize our ambitions

The Meaning of life is connectedness and
development. It is about realizing every
opportunity and potential in one’s existence.
And the opportunities have to be found and
acknowledged.
What is it you find when you find yourself deepest down?
Your belly button? An island disconnected from others?
No, you find connection. You find your real self and your
purpose in life. you realize that you are already a part of a
larger totality.
Antonovsky called it coherence. Maslow called it
transcendence . Franklin called it meaning. We call it simply
being.
