I. Objectives
Relate Hot Spot with
plate tectonics.
II. Materials
 Alcohol Lamp
 Bond paper (2 sheets)
 Test tube
 Match
 Test tube holder
 Water
III. Observations
Q36: What can you see on the surface of the
bond paper?
• Based on our observations, we can see spots
on the surface of the bond paper that are
wet.
Q37: Let’s say that the paper represents the
Earth’s crust; what do you think is represented
by the water in the test tube?
• If the paper represents the Earth’s crust, then
the water on the test tube represents the
Q38: What geologic feature do you think will
be formed at the surface of the crust?
• The geologic feature that will be formed at
the surface of the crust is volcano.

Q39: Which of the features, at the surface of

the crust, will be the oldest? The youngest?
Label these on your paper.
• The volcano that is farthest from the source
of molten materials is the oldest while the
volcano that is on top of the source is the
youngest.
Q40: Which of the features will be the most
active? The least active? Label these on your
paper.
• The youngest volcano is the most active
while the oldest volcano is the least
active.
IV. Conclusion
Hence, the formation of the volcanic
island chains is due to the source of molten
materials from the mantle called mantle
plume. As the pacific plate moves, different
parts of it will be on top of the mantle
plume to receive the molten materials
resulting in creation of the volcanic islands.
Continuing plate movement after a period
of time carries the island beyond the hot
spot, cutting it off from the magma source,
and volcanism stops.
