PREPARATION
Ophthalmic Preparation
• They are specialized dosage forms designed to be
instilled onto the external surface of the eye
(topical), administered inside (intraocular), or
adjacent (periocular) to the eye or used in
conjunction with an ophthalmic device

• The most commonly ophthalmic dosage form are


solutions, suspensions, and ointment

• Gel forming solutions
• Ocular inserts
• Intravitreal injections
• implants
Drugs use in the eye
• Miotics  cholinergic agents
• Mydriatics  anti cholinergic agents ( atropine)
• Anti inflammatories  corticosteroids
• Anti infectives  antibiotics, antiviral, antibacterials
• Surgical adjuvents
• Diagnostic ( fluorescein)

• Have a good penetrating
• Good contact time to cornea
• Easy applicable
• Comfort , non irritative
Solutions
• Advantage :
• Easy to use
• No effect to visual acquity

• Disadvantage :
• The very short time the solution stays at
the surface. The retention of a solution 
influenced by viscocity
• Poop bioavailability

• Pilocarpine ed
• Silver nitrate ed
• Zinc sulphate ed
Suspension
• Advantage :
• Easy to use
• Contact time >>

• Disadvantage :
• More irritating

• EX
• Prednisolone acetate suspension
• Fluorometholone suspension
Ointment
• Advantage :
• Contact time >>>
• Preparation more stable

• Disadvantage :
• Affect to visual acquity

Ex : chloramphenicol eo, tetracycline eo, hydrocortison eo


Eye Drop Instillation
• Patient who get more than 1 eye drop, give 10 minute after
the 1 st eye drop

• Wash hand
Ointment Instillation
• Contact time >>>
• Wash hand first
• Patient on supine position, head up pull out the palpebra then
put a n ointment , press for 2minute
