EXAMPLE OF A POEM WITH FIVE SENSES

Apple

I see a ripe apple in my apple tree,

I hear a little bird singing with glee,
I feel a drop of dew on my head,
I taste a can of apple marmalade,
I smell an apple pie, fresh made!

6
Imagine other different things you might see, hear, smell, taste or touch in your chosen time or place,
and write at least one noun* by each heading.

For example, if I choose ‘Spring’ as my topic, I could write:

I See… blue skies, I Hear… baby birds, I Smell… flower buds, I Touch… new leaves
I Taste… Easter eggs

Now we need a bit more description, so add the next part to each line: ‘The sight is…’,
‘The sound is…’, ‘The smell is…’, ‘The feeling is…’ ‘The taste is…’

Add a word to complete your 5 lines!

I See… blue skies. The sight is…beautiful

I Hear… baby birds. The sound is… chirping
I Smell… flower buds blooming. The smell is… fresh
I Touch… new leaves. The feeling is… soft
I Taste… easter eggs. The taste is… chocolatey

7
Putting it Back Together, it will be

Spring

I feel blue skies.

I taste the chirping of baby birds.
I touch fresh flower buds blooming.
I smell soft new leaves.
I hear chocolatey easter eggs.
I see adventure.

8
Children compose a poem on ‘an orange’ that starts with each of the senses, just like
the one above.

“The next poem I have for you describes
one of the five senses. I’ll read it to you,
and let’s see if you can figure out what
sense it describes.”

10
“Brontosaurus” (Gail Kredenser)

If I had a brontosaurus
I would name him Morris or Horace;
But if suddenly one day he had a lot of
little brontosauri
I would change his name to Laurie.

“Surprises” (Jean Conder Soule)

Surprises are round Or long and tallish.

Surprises are square Or flat and smallish.
Surprises are wrapped With paper and bow,
And hidden in closets Where secrets won't show.
Surprises are often Good things to eat;
A get-well toy or A brithday treat.
Surprises come In such interesting sizes -
I LIKE SURPRISES!

“Five Senses Describing Words.”
“We are going to brainstorm a list of words that you
might want to use in your poems. We will think of
adjectives, describing words, for each one of the five
senses.”

For example, let's say I'm writing about ice cream.

Taste: smooth, cold, melt in your mouth, sweet

Touch: Wet, cold, slimy, frozen
Sight: mounds, white as snow (vanilla), little crevices, puddles
(when it melts)
Smell: sweet, minty (mint chocolate chip)
Hearing: plop, splat (when it falls on the floor)
