Let’s discuss

5
Using resources and stretching out words

• Friends, we have been learning how to draw clear pictures

and add labels to tell our readers more about our pictures.
• We won’t always be able to copy words to make our labels.
• We also need to stretch and sound out words and write the
sounds we hear as best as we can!

6
Using resources and stretching out words

• This is tricky and we will practice this a lot this year so we

can get better and better!
• At first you might only be able to hear the first sound.
• That’s ok! Just do your best and write as many sounds as
you can!

Using resources and stretching out words

• We learned how to use our name cards and word wall cards
to help us with our writing.
• Things that we use to help us with our work is called a
resource.
• Today I want to show you another writing resource. This is
the alphabet linking chart.

9
Using resources and stretching out words

• If you get stuck on a sound you can use this to help you!
For example let’s say I want to write i like cats.
• I can get “I” and “like” from the word wall. But hmm “cat”
is not on the word wall! So I'm going to say the word slowly
and listen for the first sound I hear. “C-a-t”...
• Can anybody tell me what sound they heard at the
beginning? What is the letter for that sound?

write the sounds we heard!
• With lots of practice, we are going to become word
