A SHORT STORY:
GIO, LATIF, AND THE LAKSA
GLOBAL EXPERIENCES
 Gio and Latif’s story is fictional but very plausible since it
is, in fact, based on the real-life experience of one of the
authors.
 This narrative illustrate how concrete the phenomenon is.
The story shows how globalization operates at multiple,
intersecting levels.
 The Model UN activity that Gio and Latif participated in is
an international competition about international politics.
GLOBAL EXPERIENCES
 Giomet Latif (a Malaysian involved in the model UN) in
Sydney, a global city that derives its wealth and influence
from the global capital that flows through it.
 Sydney is also a metropolis of families of international
immigrants or foreigners working in the industries that
also sell their products abroad.
 They preserved their friendship online and then rekindled
this face-to-face in Singapore, another hub for global
commerce, with 40 percent of the population being
classified as “foreign talents” (Claudio & Abinales, 2018)
What is “Globalization”?

 Globalization represents the global integration of international

trade, investment, information technology and cultures.
 In our World history, they introduce around centuries the idea of
concept of Globalization; traders explore to buy rare
commodities such as salt, spices and gold, which they would
then sell in their home countries.
World Health Organization define Globalization, “the increased
interconnectedness and interdependence of people and countries, is generally
understood to include two interrelated elements: the opening of international
boarders to increasingly fast flows of goods, services, finance, people and ideas;
and the changes in institutions and policies at national and international levels
that facilitate or promote such flows.
Thomas Friedman “the inexorable integration of markets, transportation
systems, and communication systems to a degree never witnessed before- in
a way that is enabling corporations, countries, and individuals to reach around
the world farther, faster, deeper, and cheaper than ever before, and in a way
that is enabling the world to reach into corporations, countries, and individuals
farther, faster, deeper, and cheaper than ever before”
According to Lechner (2015), globalization means different things to different people .
 To a Korean Pentecostal missionary a new opportunity to
spread the faith and convert lost souls abroad.
 To a Dominican immigrant in the United States, it means
growing new roots while staying deeply involved in the home
village.
 To an Indian television viewer, it means sampling a variety of
news shows, some adopted from foreign format.
According to Lechner (2015), globalization means different things to
different people .
 To a Chinese apparel worker, it means a chance to escape
rural poverty by cutting threads of designer jeans.
 To an American shoe company executive, it means
managing a far-flung supply chain to get products to
stores.
 To a Filipino global justice advocate, it means rules of the
global game that favor rich NORTH over the poor
SOUTH.
Globalism and Globalization
Globalization represents the many process that
allow the expansion and intensification of global
connection
Globalism is a widespread belief among powerful
people that the global integration of economic
markets is beneficial for everyone, since it spreads
freedom and democracy across the world
(Claudio & Abinales, 2018)
 At some point, culture is also assimilated and trade as they exchange
of ideas and traditions by trading. The spread of
Korean pop culture across will advance the exchange of
ideas, art, language and music like other millennials
experiencing nowadays are some of the best example.

that occurs at multiple levels.
