BLENDS
Blending is one of the many ways new words are made in English. It refers to joining the beginning
of one word and the end of another to make a new word with a new meaning
EXAMPLE:
High-Technology > Hi-tech
Helicopter-Airport > Helipad
News-Broadcast > Newscast
smack-Mash > Smash
Smoke-Haze > Smaze
Work-Alcoholic > Workaholic
ACRONYMS
Blends made up of initial letters are known as acronyms. It is a pronounceable word formed from the first letter (or
first few letters) of each word in a phrase or title. The newly combined letters create a new word that becomes a
part of everyday language.
EXAMPLES:
AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
LASER - Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation
PIN - Personal Identification Number
LOL - Laugh Out Loud INFORMA
ASAP - As Soon As Possible. L
PHRASAL WORDS
Group of Words that express a concept and are used as a unit are called a phrasal words. determines the
grammatical nature of the unit.
Common types of phrasal words include noun phrases (such as a good friend), verb phrases (drives carefully),
adjective phrases (very cold and dark), adverb phrases (quite slowly), and prepositional phrases (in first
place).
EXAMPLES:
Cat-in-the-hate - Noun phrase
Fly-with-the-wind - Verb phrase
Sharp-and-shiny - Adjective phrase
Quite-smoothly - Adverb phrase
