author.
• She wrote ‘Homegoing’, a novel
about the systemic effects of
slavery.

means when she says: “The
consequences of their fate
reverberate through the
generations that follow from the
Gold Coast of Africa to the
plantations of Mississippi.”
What is happening to them, the
people that are sold into slavery,
will have consequences in the
future to the Africans that are left
behind (and their countries) as
well as to those living in the United
States.

• Effia is a black woman, she is


married to James.
• James is a white man. He is the
governor of Cape Coast Castle.
• Quay is the son of James and Effia.
• Adwoa is a young black girl from
Effia’s village who is also married to
a white man.
• Yaw is a black man. He is a history
teacher.
• The Assante are a tribe in Ghana.
