Used to and Would

Used to and Would


● USED TO and WOULD are used to describe events, situations or actions
that happened in the past, but don’t happen anymore.

● EX:

● When I was a child, my grandma would read to me every night.


● When I was a child, my grandma used to read to me every night.
But, we do not use would with state
verbs:

• They used to live in London. (not would)

I used to have a pet dog. (not would)


WOULD on the other hand
is used just to express
HABITS in the past not
General Information.
Example:

• When I was six years old, I would study from


Monday to Friday.
Sometimes
WOULD is

acceptable
When I was young, I used to smoke

When I was young, I would smoke

When I was young, I would smoke a


cigarette after every meal.
