Shearing - Main Processes
o Punching: to create holes (sheared slug is discarded)
o Blanking: to cut various shapes from sheet stock (the slug
is the part, the rest is scrap)
o Perforating: punching a number of holes in a sheet
o Parting: shearing a sheet into two pieces
o Notching: removing pieces or various shapes from edges
o Nibbling: in nibbling a machine called a nibbler moves a
straight punch up and down rapidly into a die
o Lancing: is a useful combination of cutting and shallow
forming all in one operation (e.g. cooling louvers)
o Fine Blanking: an impingement ring locks the part tightly
in place to prevent edge distortion (burr free parts are
produced)
