Topic 2 Magnetic sensors (Faraday effect)

 An inductive sensor is a device that uses the principle of

electromagnetic induction to detect or measure objects. An
inductor develops a magnetic field when a current flows
through it; alternatively, a current will flow through a
circuit containing an inductor when the magnetic field
through it changes. This effect can be used to detect
metallic objects that interact with a magnetic field. Non-
metallic substances such as liquids or some kinds of dirt
do not interact with the magnetic field
 Magnetic sensors detect moving ferrous metal. The
simplest magnetic sensor consists of a wire coiled around a
permanent magnet. A ferrous object approaching the
sensor changes magnetic flux through the coil, generating
a voltage at the coil terminals.

 Magnetic flow meters measure the flow rate of a liquid by
measuring the voltage generated as the liquid flows
through a magnetically-charged field. This operating
principle is based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic
induction, which states that a voltage will be induced in a
conductor moving through a magnetic field.
Magnetic flow meter
A magnetic flow meter (mag- meter) is a
volumetric flow meter which does not
have any moving parts and is ideal for
wastewater applications or any dirty
liquid which is conductive or water
based. Magnetic flowmeters will
generally not work with hydrocarbons,
distilled water and many non- aqueous
solutions). Magnetic flowmeters are also
ideal for applications where low pressure
drop and low maintenance are required.
