ATOMS
• Atoms are defined as “the basic building blocks of matter”.

• It is the smallest constituent unit of matter that posses the properties of the che
mical element. Atoms don’t exist independently, instead, they form ions and mol
ecules which further combine in large numbers to form matter that we see, feel a
nd touch.
• Atoms are much too small to be seen; hence experiments to find out their structu
re and behavior have to be conducted with large numbers of them. From the resu
lts of these experiments we may attempt to construct a hypothetical model of an
atom that behaves like the true atom.

MOCULES
Molecules consist of one or more atoms bound together by covalent (c
hemical) bonds. Atoms may be depicted by circle shapes, each of which
has a nucleus at the center (containing protons and neutrons), surroun
ded by one or more concentric circles representing the ‘shells’ or ‘level
s’ in which the electrons surrounding the nucleus of the atom are locat
ed and markings indicating the electron.at each level. A molecule is the
smallest thing a substance can be divided into while remaining the sam
e substance. It is made up of two or more atoms that are bound togeth
er by chemical bonding.

What is a molecule exampl
e?

A molecule is the smallest particle that has the ch

emical properties of that element or compound in
a chemical element or compound. Molecules cons
ist of atoms that chemical bonds bind together.

ATOMS VS. MOCULES
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that may or may not
exists independently; it contains the similar chemical properties as
of the element. On the other hand, the molecule is composed of
two more atoms held together by the chemical bonding. The
molecules can exist in the Free State and can be further divided
into the atoms they are made up of. For instance, water molecule
comprises of two atoms of Hydrogen, bonded with an atom of
Oxygen. The water molecule when gets divided splits into the
constituent atoms of Hydrogen and Oxygen.
