The poet uses personification and attributes the human qualities to daffodils.
The poet calls daffodils golden rather than yellow in order to express their majesty
and beauty

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Personification Personification
Personifies the flowers that they were fluttering (like birds or butterflies) and dancing
(like human beings). There is also an indication that it was a breezy day.
=> An overall idea of the landscape which includes the valleys and hills, the lake, the
trees, the flowers beneath them and the breezy atmosphere.

Simile implied the daffodils as the stars
And twinkle on the Milky Way, simile the shape - number of the daffodils
Personification
He was amazed at a large number of daffodils which he could not count at the beauty of the
flowers.
Sprightly dance means lively and jubilant dance. The daffodils were moving their heads in a
rhythm which looked quite amazing and seemed to the poet as they were dancing.

The waves beside them danced, but they
The waves dance in the breeze, but the daffodils seem happier than the waves
The entire scene has been invested with a joyful human like presence.

A poet could not but be gay,
The poet can not help but feel happy, or gay with such a beautiful vision to look at.
The flowers and waves feel like companion to him

I gazed – and gazed – but little thought
Repetition
The repetition of “gaze”: how moved or charmed the poet was. He kept looking at the
flowers, forgetting his surroundings.
The poet does not think that he fully appreciated the vision
The word “wealth”: a more permanent kind of happiness.
Stanza 4
For oft, when on my couch I lie
When this happens, the poet feels calm, refreshed, motivated and good about himself.
This is how nature influences him. The memories of the daffodils fills his heart with
pleasure and joy and he feels like dancing along with the daffodils. This shows the
healing and refreshing effect of nature on the poet.
