Dear Future Self...
I’m 18 years old and am writing this letter to you in May 2021 as a requirement for my
English class this semester at Independence High School in Brambleton, VA. I am a senior and
am busy with lacrosse, the cars and a girlfriend. My favorite classes are math and english. My
extracurricular activities include lacrosse and a girlfriend. Next year I hope to succeed and be
happy.

The thing I will remember most about my first semester at Independence is being the
MC. The person I will not forget from my first few months at Independence is owen because he
was the first person i really connected with and made the school transition better. I also will
never forget about CJ and Mick and JoJo.

The thing I will remember most about my last semester at Independence is ranting to mrs.
soni. The person I will not forget from my last few months at Independence is still my boys
because they stuck with me throughout everything we have been through. The thing I was
happiest about was transferring schools because rock ridge sucked.

In 2021 the cost of gas was 2.99 for regular and like 4.00 for premium. The
cost of my favorite meal at mcdonalds was $7. My favorite album that came out in
2020 – 2021 was Chicken tendies by clinton kane. My favorite actor/actress is ryan
reynolds because have you seen the guy. My favorite movie that came out in 2020 –
2021 is snyders cut. The term or “it” phrase that my friends and I used the most was
buffoonery. Among my friends, I’m known as charlie because thats my name.

In 2021, the style for teenagers could be said to have been variations of gothic
and sundresses. It was common to see egirls, sundresses, and shorts and T-shirts
when walking down the halls at school. I usually get to school by The Rover. After
school, I play lacrosse, work on the cars, and see jenna. For fun, I like to see jenna
and work on cars. My hobbies are cars, golf, and shooting. My favorite sport and/or
sports teams are the ravens.

Oh, and another thing . . .
I have pets—a dog named happy that I got when I was 14, a dog named coco.... The latest
technology this year is airless tires; the gadget that I cannot live without is my computer. My
favorite vacation was to kiawah with my family and jenna when I was 17.

My goal for the future is to be successful and run the company. My hope for the
future that everyone can get along and this political war is over. I always want to remember
jenna no matter what happens to us.

My advice for my future self is to always be true to her and make sure she is happy and never
forget to make her smile everyday. These are my dreams and hope for you and the future!

Sincerely, Charlie Joyce

Hi Mr. Palmer! I pulled out my scrapbook from your class to find my
personal statement for a nursing school application, and as I was looking
through it I read the letter to myself. I guess 18 year old me was psychic
or something because it was spot on and exactly what I needed to hear
at this point in my life. So I just wanted to take a second and say thank
you for assigning that because it ended up being incredibly helpful.
-Christie

Palmer’s Response: That is fantastic! That makes me so happy!

I’m glad it was helpful and something you can cherish.

Christie: It really is!! So whenever someone complains, they’ll thank you

later!
