Plant cells (cork)

Plant cells

In 1663 an English scientist, Robert Hooke,

discovered cells in a piece of cork, which he
examined under his primitive microscope.

Actually, Hooke only observed cell walls

because cork cells are
dead and without cytoplasmic contents.
Hooke drew the cells he saw and also
coined the word
CELL. The word cell is derived from the
Latin word 'cellula' which means small
compartment.
Below are figure showing cork cells under
the microscope
Plant tissues

Common types of plant cells:

Three basic plant cells can be distinguished:

parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma:
-Parenchyma cells are living cells and have
thin primary cell walls. Their functions include
synthesizing, storing and division;

Collenchyma cells

 Collenchyma cells are living cells

and have unevenly thickened
primary cell walls.
 Their function is flexible support

Sclerenchyma cells

 They are dead cells with secondary

cell walls that are usually
impregnated with lignin.
 The functions of these cells include
transportation and support.

. You are going to study two

types of sclerenchyma cells: sclereids that are
isodiametric cells and xylem elements that are elongated
