Jesus - 3 days in the earth

Matthew 12: 38-41
The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
    the Maker of heaven and earth,
    and in Jesus Christ, His only Son,
our Lord:
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
    born of the virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, dead, and buried;
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the
dead;
He ascended into heaven,
    and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty;
    from thence he shall come to judge the
quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
    the holy catholic church;
    the communion of saints;
    the forgiveness of sins;
    the resurrection of the body;
    and the life everlasting.
Amen.
The Athanasian Creed
37. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is
one man, so God and man is one Christ;
38. Who suffered for our salvation,
descended into hell, rose again the third
day from the dead;
39. He ascended into heaven, He sits on
the right hand of the Father, God,
Almighty;
40. From thence He shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.

The place of spiritual reward

for the righteous is often referred to
in Hebrew as Gan Eden (GAHN ehy-DEHN)
(the Garden of Eden).
This is not the same place where
Adam and Eve were;
it is a place of spiritual perfection.

Three Days in the Tomb
Hebrew = pardec Greek = paradeisos

Only the very righteous go directly

to Gan Eden. The average person descends
to a place of punishment and/or
purification, generally referred to as
Gehinnom (guh-hee-NOHM)
(in Yiddish, Gehenna), but sometimes
as She'ol or by other names.
Three Days in the Tomb
Hebrew = pardec Greek = paradeisos

The period of time in Gehinnom does not

exceed 12 months, and then ascends
to take his place on Olam Ha-Ba.
(The World to Come)
Three Days in the Tomb
Hebrew = pardec Greek = paradeisos
Only the utterly wicked do not ascend
at the end of this period; their souls are
punished for the entire 12 months.
Sources differ on what happens at the end
of those 12 months: some say that the
wicked soul is utterly destroyed and ceases
to exist while others say that the soul
continues to exist in a state of
consciousness of remorse.

Mormon – Baptism for the Dead
Many people have died without receiving
a valid baptism, and they cannot undergo
this precious ritual as mere spirits.
"Because all on the earth do not have
the opportunity to accept the gospel
during mortality, the Lord has authorized
baptisms performed by proxy for the dead.

Mormon – Baptism for the Dead
Therefore, those who accept the gospel in the spirit
world may qualify for entrance into God's kingdom
One thing that should be made perfectly clear
about Mormon baptisms for the dead is that
each deceased soul has the personal choice
o accept or reject it.

must accept this ordinance;
he or she is simply given the opportunity to choose

IX. The Descent of Christ Into Hell.
STATUS CONTROVERSIAE.
Chief Controversy concerning This Article.
4] For it is sufficient that we know that Christ
descended into hell, destroyed hell for all
believers, and delivered them from the power
of death and of the devil, from eternal
condemnation and the jaws of hell. But how
this occurred we should [not curiously
investigate, but] reserve until the other world,
where not only this point [mystery], but also
still others will be revealed, which we here
simply believe, and cannot comprehend with
our blind reason.
