Introduction to Auricular
Acupuncture
Any acupressure or acupuncture treatment that is limited to your ears
(Raypole, 2019).
A method for diagnosing and treating physical and psychosomatic
dysfunctions by stimulating a specific point in the ear (Hou et al.,
2015).
 This involves neurological reflex, neurotransmitters, cytokines,
the immune system and inflammation (Hou et al., 2015).
Has been used for approximately 2,500 years (Hou et al., 2015).
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, stimulating points
in the ear can restore balance between Qi and blood (Hou et al.,
2015).

History of Auricular
Acupuncture
Has been used for approximately 2,500 years in
Europe and surrounding regions (Hou et al., 2015).
The oldest record of auricular acupuncture in
China was recorded around 100 BCE (Hou et al.,
2015).
In 1956, Dr. Paul Nogier—The Father of Auricular
Acupuncture, presented the “inverted fetus” map
of the ear to treat various corresponding points of
the body (Hou et al., 2015).

and Licensing Requirements
In the United States, you must attend an accredited
acupuncture or Chinese Medicine program and obtain
a master’s degree to become a practicing
acupuncturist (NHSU, 2021).
In the United States, it is required to pass specific
certification exams as well (NHSU, 2021).
Auricular Acupuncture
Techniques
The external ear is considered a microcosm of the
body (Mosher, 2021).
Containing over 200 precise pressure points, each
associated with conditions affecting physical and
emotional health (Mosher, 2021).
Using disposable metal needles, which are inserted a
few millimeters into the skin and remain in place for
approximately 20 minutes (Mosher, 2021).

Ear Seeds (Raypole, 2019).
 Based on the same principles as acupuncture (Raypole, 2019).

 Placed in certain points and typically fall off on their own after
three to five days or removed with tweezers or your nails (Raypole,
2019).

 Should be removed with signs of irritation: redness, swelling,

soreness and tenderness (Raypole, 2019).
Summary
The ear is home to over 200 precise points that can
have affects through out you body to help with
symptoms form pain to addiction.

To become an acupuncturist, you need to complete a

masters degree, and pass state certification exams.

Effects can be achieved via needle insertion or ear

seeds.
