ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF

ENERGY THROUGH SOLAR

POWER AND CREATIVE WAYS
OF ENERGY CONSERVATION
IMPORTANCE OF OUR DEMO USING
SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
STUDENTS/YOUTH
• Create awareness of the Alternative Power and Green Energy.
• Develop creativity on different possibilities using Solar Panel
like toys or any projects they can think of.

PARENTS/COMMUNITY
• Can save/minimize their electricity bills.
• People living in the remote areas having no electricity can have
this alternative source of energy instead of using kerosene and
may avoid fire.
TEACHERS
• Can integrate the solar power system to science and
technology subjects.
• Can set-up their own solar power system in school or
at home.
SOLAR POWER

• Free energy harvested from the sun.

• Alternative and renewable green
energy.
TYPES OF SOLAR POWER
CONNECTION
GRID TIED SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
• On-grid, utility-interactive, grid intertie and grid back feeding
solar system are all terms used to describe the same concept –
a solar system that is connected to the utility power grid.
OFF GRID SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
• (off-the-grid, standalone) is the obvious alternative to one that
is grid-tied. To ensure access to electricity at all times, off-grid
solar systems require battery storage and a backup generator
(if you live off-the-grid).
HYBRID SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
• combines the best from grid-tied and off-grid solar systems.
These systems can either be described as off-grid solar with
utility backup power, or grid-tied solar with extra battery
storage.
BASIC PARTS OF AN OFF GRID SOLAR
POWER SYSTEM
1. Solar Panel is composed of photovoltaic cells arranged in
series and parallel connection. It harvests the light energy
from the sun which transform it into electrical energy.
TYPES OF SOLAR PANEL

• Monocrystalline silicon cells - Highest efficiency and highest cost

• Cast monosilicon cells - High efficiency and lower cost
• Polycrystalline silicon cells - Lower efficiency and lowest cost
2. Solar Charge Controller is a device used to
regulate the current coming from the Solar Panel
going to the Battery. It prevents the battery from
over-charging and discharging.
3. Battery used store the energy produced by Solar
Panel through the Solar Charge Controller.
4. Power Inverter it converts the current from 12v
DC to 220v AC
5. Circuit Breaker is device use to cut-off the
current from the solar panel going to the solar
charge controller.
6. Loads are power consuming device which is
either 12v or 220v lighting fixtures or appliances.

ADVANTAGES OF PV TECHNOLOGY

1. Reliability
- In harsh conditions the system has been shown to work.

2. Durability
- Most modules are guaranteed for 25 years with production even
after that.
3. Low Maintenance Cost
- Systems require periodic inspection and occasion maintenance.
4. No Fuel Cost
- No liquid fuel to deal with to produce power.
5. Reduced sound Pollution
- Only sound produced is from the pump and tracking system if
used.
ADVANTAGES OF PV TECHNOLOGY – CONT.
6. Photovoltaic Modularity
- Modules can be added to increase power.
7. Safety
- No fuel required to be stored or used.
8. Independence
- Based on the use, if system can be a stand alone system with
components.
9. Electric grid decentralization
- For longer systems a small decentralized power station can reduce
power outages.
DISAVANTAGES OF PV TECHNOLOGY
1. Initial Cost
- The cost of solar power system generally has to be expended up front
and benefits received over time.
2. Energy Storage
- If power is required outside daylight hours, then batteries are
generally needed.
3. Efficiency Improvements
- The use of solar power for home, office, barn, etc. use, FIRST
requires that energy conservation be practiced.
4. Education
- Learning how solar systems are different from the electric grid is one
of the first things that needs to be understood from potential users of
the systems.
