AIR POLLUT
EFFECTS

INTRODUCTION:
AIR POLLUTION:
The introduction of chemicals and biological
materials into atmosphere that cause harm to
humans and other living organisms is called
“Air Pollution”
AIR POLLUTANT:
The substance that causes harm to humans
and the environment is known as “Air
Pollutant”.
CLASSIFICATION OF POLLUTANTS
DEPENDING UPON THEIR STATE
• SOLID PARTICLES
• LIQUID DROPLETS
• GASEOUS
DEPENDING ON THE EFFECT OF THE
POLLUTANTS
• PRIMARY POLLUTANTS
• SECONDARY POLLUTANTS
MAJOR PRIMARY POLLUTANTS:
• Sulfur oxides (SOx)
• Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
• Carbon monoxide(CO)
• Carbon dioxide(CO2)
• Chlorofluorocarbones(CFC)
• Radio Active Pollutants
SECONDARY POLLUTANTS:
• Particulate Matter(PM)
• Ground Level Ozone(O3)
SOURCES:
The various locations activities and
factors,which are responsible for the
releasing of air pollutants int the
atmosphere.

SOURCES INCLUDE:
ANTHROPOGENIC SOURCES(HUMAN ACTIVITY)
NATURAL SOURCES
Great Smog Of London:
The Great Smog of '52
or Big Smoke was
severe air pollution
event that affected
London,during
December 1952.
It occurred between 5th
DECEMBER to 9th
DECEMBER
Nearly 4,000 died and
1,00,000 had fallen ill.
ACID RAIN:
• Acid rain is
caused due to
emmisons of
sulfur dioxide
(SO2) and
nitrogen oxides
(NOx) from
industries from
power plants,
cars and
factories.
pH of ACID RAIN:

• The pH of
acid rain
lies
between
4.3 to 5.0
Effects of ACID RAIN
• Dried plants at
Applachian
mountains.
• Worn houses and
corroded metal
railing in cities
• Indias most

effected.
Effects of AIR POLLUTION on HUMANS:
EFFECTS DUE TO SO2:
• Irritation of eyes, nose, throat; damage
to lungs when inhaled
• Acute and chronic asthma
• Lung cancer
EFFECTS DUE TO NITROGEN:
• Increased incidence of respiratory
illness
• Increased airway resistance
EFFECTS DUE TO CARBON MONOXIDE
• Toxicity of the central nervous system
and heart
• Loss of vision
Effects of AIR POLLUTION on ANIMALS:
Fishes on fresh water lakes are
being effected by air pollution.
Nearly 18,000 lakesare
Effected by air polluton.
Polluton also effects by
the plants on which they feed. (Fish from Normal Lake)
Excessive Ultra Viloet

Ozone may Damage lung
tissues of animals.

How To Prevent AIR POLLUTION
• DRIVE LESS
• SMART DRIVING PRACTICES
• NEW CAR PURCHASES
• ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS
• SAVE ENERGY
• REDUCE WASTE
