Global Warming: Truth or

Fiction?
By: Chelsea Lynch
What is Global Warming?
• Scientists have defined it as “an increase
in the temperature of the planet over many
years”.
• Others would say: “an increase in Earth’s
temperature resulting from enhancement
of the greenhouse effect, or air pollution”.
What they tell you
• “The Earth is warming because of us!”
• “There will be storms, flooded coasts and
huge disruption in climate!”
• “Carbon dioxide is to blame!”
• “Global warming will wipe out the polar
bear and other species!”
• “The hole in the ozone is getting bigger!”
What they should’ve told you
• The planet’s temperature has increased by 0.6°
C throughout the last century.
• Scientists believe there are more then one factor
causing global warming and that humans are not
the main one.
• There have and always will be storms and
flooding. Not all of will be a result from global
warming
• Water Vapor, not carbon dioxide, is the main
cause of the greenhouse effect.
What they should’ve told you, cont.
• Those who worry about the effect on
wildlife ignore evolution. Species will
naturally change when the climate
changes.
• There is no “hole” in the ozone. It is just a
spot where the ozone runs thin.
• The ozone “hole” is smaller than it was last
year. Scientists predict that it could
disappear by 2060.
Al Gore’s InConvenient Truth
• Tells of Kilimanjaro melting
• Glaciers and lakes are disappearing
• Greenland having a climate change
• And a predicted rise in sea levels of 18-20
ft.
Reality
• The Mountain of Kilimanjaro has been melting
because of a climatic shift that began over a 100
years ago, not suddenly because of global
warming.
• National Academy of Science states “Glaciers
are and have been receding at the same pace
for over a 100 years.”
• Greenland’s climate was warmer in the ’20s and
’30s than it is today.
• Scientist’s predict a rise in sea level of about
0.09 to 0.88 from 1990-2100.
Sound familiar?
• A professor of Atmospheric Science at the
University of Alabama said, “I remember
as a college student…being told it was a
certainty that by the year 2000, the world
would be starving and out of energy.”
• It was not too long ago that the call to stop
using hair spray and Lysol spray cans
because it would increase the ozone,
blocking out heat and causing an ice age.
Conclusion:to panic or not to
panic?
• There is no immediate danger
• If Global warming does prove to be a real
issue there are ways in which to adjust.
• “better to…adjust…rather than wreck life
as we know it by trying to stop it.”
