ABSTRACT
Convective heat transfer between a surface and the surrounding has been a major
issue and a topic of study for a long time. In this project, the heat transfer performance of fin
is analyzed by ANSYS workbench for the design of fin with various design configuration
such as cylinder, Parabola(Concave, Convex) and rectangular configuration. The heat
transfer performance of fin with same base temperature having various geometry is
compared. In this thermal analysis, Aluminum was used as the base metal for the fin material
and for various configurations. Fin of various configuration are design with the help of
CATIA V5R16 software Analysis of fin performance done through the ANSYS software.
INTRODUCTION
The fin is a major component used in many systems for increasing the rate of heat

transfer. In order to cool the system, fins are provided on the surface of the system to

increase the rate of heat transfer. By doing thermal analysis on the fins, it is helpful to

know the heat dissipation and rate of heat transfer in different types of fin.

we know that, by increasing the surface area of fin configuration we can increase the

heat dissipation rate, so designing such a large complex systems is very difficult. There

fore fins are provided on the source of the system to increase heat transfer.
There are different types of shape and size fins used in engineering applications to increasing
the heat transfer rate such as
 Rectangular fins
 Triangular fins
 Trapezium fins
 Circular segmental fins
 Parabola(Concave, Convex) fins
 Cylinder(Circular, Tapered)fins

APPLICATIONS
Fins are most commonly used in heat exchanging devices such as,

 Economizers of steam power plants

 Heat exchangers of a wide variety, used in different industries

 Cooling of electric motors, transformers etc.

 Cooling of electronic equipments, chips, I.C. boards etc.

ADVANTAGES OF FINS

 Fins are used to increase surface areas for heat transfer purposes.
 By using fins, heat transfer rate can be increased without any preventive
maintainance.
 It is the cheapest way for increasing the heat transferring rate frome the hot
bodies.

observed that heat transfer rate increases with perforations as
compared to fins of similar dimensions without perforations.

aluminium alloy 1060 such as rectangular extension, trapezium extension, triangular
extensions and circular segmental extensions. The heat
transfer performance of fin with same geometry with various
extensions and without extensions is compared. The ranging
5% to 12% increase in heat transfer can be achieved with
these various extensions on fin as compare to same geometry

PLAN OF WORK

 3D modeling is done for different profiles by using CATIA .

 The above files are imported into ANSYS and analysis part is done.
 The rate of change of heat transfer for different fin configurations can be
determined by using different types of alloy metals.
 Then we can find which type of fin will give maximum effeciency.
