Transient tachypnea of the newborn can be ruled in with signs of tachypnea, grunting, rales in both lung fields, subcostal retractions, and acrocyanosis. Bacterial pneumonia is ruled in with tachypnea and low oxygen saturation but ruled out with fever and abnormal chest x-ray findings. Heart disease is ruled in with low oxygen saturation and tachypnea but ruled out with tachycardia, murmurs, or arrhythmias.
