WATERPROOFING PRINCIPLE

 A proper sealing  In the presence of water SikaSwell® profiles

system in the and sealants develop an expansive swelling

to prevent long- and provide a durable waterproofing solution
term leakage. in the joint.
SikaSwell®
WATERPROOFING & SWELLING PRINCIPLE
HYDROPHILIC GASKET
 Swells in contact with water
 Builds up a swelling pressure inside of
the construction
 This swelling pressure seals the joint
and stops the crossing of water

MAIN ADVANTAGES
 Easy and quick installation
 No influence on formwork or
reinforcement
 Highly economic and cost effective
SikaSwell®
TYPICAL USES

 Before expansion, voids are open
around the profile. Water is able to
penetrate the structure and covering

 After contact with water the profiles

swell and close the gap. Water is not
able to penetrate through the structure.

FUNKTIONALITY AND APPLICATION
WATERPROOF CONCRETE
REQUIREMENTS
 Hydrophilic gaskets need a good concrete
quality (well compacted)
 Hydrophilic gaskets can not seal very large
voids or honey combs in concrete
structures

PREMATURE SWELLING
 The SikaSwell® products and adhesive
should be protected from rain / weather
prior to placement of the concrete to
prevent the product from swelling before
encapsulation in the concrete.
SIKASWELL® – PROFILES
BACK UP SYSTEM
BACK UP SYSTEM
 SikaSwell® is often used as a back up
system of other sealing systems like
injection hoses or waterbars.

 Minimum concrete cover of all products

used must be respected.

 SikaSwell® is placed on the water side of

the construction.
COMPARISON OF SIKASWELL® PRODUCTS
LIMITATIONS
APPLICATION LIMITATIONS
 Structures with a water pressure of more than 2 bar normally have dimensions of
> 40-60 cm and the risk of failures in the concrete structure due to workmanship,
placement and difficult compaction increases considerably.

 Hydrophilic gaskets can also be used for water pressures > 2 bar in special cases, such
as
self-compacting concrete structures

combined use with SikaFuko® injection hose system in the construction joint. The
injection hose shall be installed approx. centrically, and the hydrophilic
gasket next to the water face, with a clear distance of min. 100 mm between
gasket and injection hose.

 Do not use SikaSwell® products for movement joints!

 Please consult the most recent issue of the local product datasheets and method
statement.
