• To develop an understanding about Essential Drug


List(EDL).
• To be familiar with NEDL of Pakistan.
• Students will learn the update knowledge about EDL.
• DRAP of Pakistan has the responsibility of revising &
updating National Essential Drug List.
• Under the 18th Constitutional Amendment, health
services delivery has been transferred to provinces.
Definition
Essentials medicines are those that satisfy the priority
health care needs of the majority of population and
should be available in adequate amount, in
appropriate dosage and in affordable prices.
Why Essential Medicine list is developed:
A limited range of carefully selected essential medicines
leads to:
 Better health care
 Better drug management
 Lower costs
Advantages of Essential Drug
List
1. Higher quality of care.
2. Better management of medicines including
quality prescribed medicines.
3. Effective use of health resources.
4. We can prevent the irrational use of
medicines.
5. It helps to safe the life of patients by ensuring
the quality, safety and effectiveness.
6. Essential drugs increase the credibility of a
health system and promote patient
participation.
7.Choice of drugs from EDL increases the cost
effectiveness of pharmaceutical expenditure.
Updating of Model List
• Expert research committee send the
recommendations to WHO for updating of
model list.
• With the passage of time new treatment and
new drug substances are discovered which are
more effective.
• So, these new drugs are added in essential list
to improve the quality of life of patients.
National Essential Drug List of
Pakistan (NEDL)
• Every country defines its own list of essential
medicines in accordance with the health status
and requirements of its population.
• NEDL includes the drugs which are important for
basic health care system to fulfill the requirement
of patient.
• It was 1st prepared in 1994 in consultation with
relevant experts.
• The list was previously revised in 1995 and
2000.
• April 2003 is the 3rd revision containing 452
drugs of different pharmacological class.

Salient features of NEDL
• Medicines have been categorized at various level
of health services:
• (P) – Primary : For use at the Primary Health
Care Level including Basic Health Units and Rural
Health Centers.
• (S) – Secondary: For use at the Secondary Health
Center Level i.e. hospitals.
• (T) – Tertiary: For use at the specialized and sub-
specialized levels for specific expertise diagnostic
precision or special equipment required for proper
use.
Conclusion
• Basically it is a global concept to optimize the
quality of life.
• The concept of essential medicines is forward
looking.
• It incorporates the need to regularly update
medicines selections to reflect new therapeutic
options and changing therapeutic needs, the
need to ensure drug quality, and the need or
emerging diseases, and medicines to meet
changing resistant patterns.
• Implement in all over the world. Worldwide
acceptable concept that is evidence based
provide services to the patient.
• The WHO Model list are now seen as equally
relevant to high, middle, and low-income
countries, particularly with the inclusion of
new, highly effective and expensive medicines
in more recent years.
 
SUMMARY
• NEDL of Pakistan first prepared in 1994, then revised in
1995, 2000, 2003,2007, 2013 and 2018 by Ministry of
Health.
• Last edition of NEDL was published in 2016 which now
has been reviewed and current edition of 2018 has been
published comprising 428 drugs
