Objective:
At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

1. Recall the layout of a basic lubrication system

2. Identify and state the function of its components.
3. Understand the operation of a basic lubrication system

A Basic Lubrication System consists of these

sub systems;

1. Pressure System
2. Scavenge System
3. Ventilation System

Lubrication System
Pressure System

Oil is stored in the tank

A pressure pump draws

oil from the tank and send
it under pressure to the
system

Pressurised oil is cleaned

by a pressure filter

Excessive pressure is
relieved through a system
relief valve back to tank

Pressurised clean oil is

delivered to the engine
bearings

Lubrication System
Scavenge System

After lubricating, cooling and

cleaning the bearings, the oil Hot scavenge oil is
flows through scavenge filters cooled by an oil
cooler on its way
The scavenge filters trap all back to the tank
debris from the bearings

Magnets may be installed in the

filters to catch magnetic particles
to monitor bearing wear

Scavenge pumps help to

take oil away from the
bearings and return it
back to the tank

Scavenge System

Cooled scavenge oil is

returned to the oil tank

Ventilation System
Air is returned together with
scavenge oil to the oil tank

The air/oil is sent into the

accessory gearbox where the
air is separated from the oil by
a centrifugal breather and
vented to atmosphere

To atmosphere

Air is pumped into bearing housings

and used to help keep the oil from
leaking out

Lubrication System Indication

The oil system is monitored in the flight deck for:
1. Pressure
2. Temperature
3. Filter clog

Lights and gauges are used.

The gauges show the existing The lights are warning lights
pressure and temperature. which will illuminate when
thresholds are reached.
