Tragic Hero
Common characteristics of a
tragic hero according to Aristotle

“hero” stuff we learned
earlier this year?
Aristotle’s Definition of Tragedy
Tragedy depicts the downfall of a basically
good person through some fatal error or
misjudgment, producing suffering and
insight on the part of the protagonist and
arousing pity and fear on the part of the
audience.
"A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of
his own downfall.” - Aristotle
Tragic Hero
A tragic hero is a privileged, exalted
character of high status, who suffers
a fall from glory into suffering
because of a tragic flaw and fate
makes an “error of judgment” that
inevitably leads to his/her own
destruction.
The Tragic Hero: Trait One
The tragic hero must be essentially admirable
and good--usually of noble or high birth
