PRESENTATION

TOPIC:
CONSTRAIN FACED IN DAIRY INDUSTRY
GROUP MEMBERS NAME ID NO
INTRODUCTION
A dairy farming basically means is where a dairy farmer manages dairy
cows and milking operations to ensure maximum milk production. Typical
responsibilities include monitoring the health of the cows, administering
medication, feeding, using milking equipment, managing the herd and
managing waste. Some dairy farms process the milk on site, while others
supply milk to dairy processing companies. This presentation will mainly
aim on the constrain faced by dairy industry.

MILK PRICE
Milk production follows a seasonal
trend, with traditional peak production
time in May after the calving season
and a trough in October/November as
grass becomes poorer.
Due to this farmers productivity has
become low. Also milk prices
decrease because of other substitute.
ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS
Dairy animals do well in cool and
wet areas, which have less tsetse
flies. Environmental condition have
an big impact due to this the butter
content and milk production of cows
starts to decrease.
SKILFUL OF LABOURS
In order to run a business skilful labours
are needed, because in dairy farming they
are many management needed like
operating teat cups for milking, operating
new technology(machines) etc. Therefore,
if there is no skilful labour available
proper management of dairy cows
industry cannot be carried out. Which will
lead in decrease in dairy production.
DISEASE
When a dairy cattle is suffering from
disease it wont be able to produce high
milk and it will not consume more
feed which will result in lameness
which will cause more suffering of
animals. And a major disease of udder
is mastitis which is described as the
inflammation of the udder usually
caused by bacterial infection.
HOUSING
If cubicle housing is not well designed
and managed it can be uncomfortable for
cows to lie down in, which can lead to a
number of welfare problems
Some herds are housed throughout the
year. We believe cows need to have access
to an outside area to let them exercise and
carry out their natural behaviours. Poor
ventilation and high humidity increase the
risk and spread of infection.
LACK OF MARKETING FACILITIES
Due to lack of marketing facilities and
extension services, there is poor
perception of the farmers towards
commercial dairy enterprise as an
alternative to other occupation. Also
means of transport is not well developed
in livestock farming areas. This means
that the farmers may not be able to
deliver milk to the factories on time and
milk often goes bad.
SHORTAGE OF FEED
Shortage of green fodder and feed
concentrate is the root cause of poor
performance of dairy sector in
general as the genetic milk
production potential of crossbred
cow could not be exploited fully in
absence of proper nutrition.
CONCLUSIONS
Dairy farming is a complicated business because the farmer has to keep the
cows on a schedule in order to maintain a steady supply of milk year round.
A cow must be at least two years old before she is bred, and she is able to
make milk only after she has given birth to a calf. The milk that the cow
produces is food for her young. However, even after the calf is older and
weaned, the mother continues to produce extra milk that humans can use for
food.
