NEGATIVE STATEMENTS

Negative statements are opposite of positive statements and are


necessary to express an opposite idea. In negative statements,
negative words are used which include never, no, nobody, none,
hardly etc.2
NEGATIVE WORDS AND HELPING VERBS
EXAMPLES OF NEGATIVE WORDS
Sentence: Jennie has money.
Negative: Jennie has no money.

Sentence: My guests are arriving now.


Negative: My guests are not arriving now.

Sentence: Jenetta does miss her mom.


Negative: Jenetta does’nt miss her mom.
DOUBLE NEGATIVES
Double negatives are two negatives used in same phrase or sentence. They are
considered incorrect in standard English. You should avoid double negative in all
formal writings.
For example:
I couldn’t find no paper. (Incorrect)
I couldn’t find anypaper.(Correct)

I don’t want nothing. (Incorrect)


I don’t want anything. (Correct)
NEGATIVE STATEMENTS OF PAST TENSE

Sentense: Paula called me yesterday.


Negative: Paula did not call me yesterday.

Sentence: Sana went to grocery store.


Negative: Sana never went to grocery store.

Sentence: Gina laughed when she saw the huge pile of laundry.
Negative: Gina did not laugh when she saw the huge pile of laundry.
