EXPLAIN THE MORPHOLOGIC

PATTERN IN ACUTE
INFLAMMATION
13.5
CHRONIC INFLAMMATION MORPHOLOGY

Chronic inflammation is characterized by:

1. Infiltration with mononuclear cells, which include

macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells

2. Tissue destruction, induced by the persistent

offending agent or by the inflammatory cells

3. Healing by connective tissue replacement of damage

tissue, accomplished by proliferation of small blood
vessels (angiogenesis), and in particular, fibrosis
CHRONIC INFLAMMATION MORPHOLOGY

1. Granulomatous inflammation is a form of chronic

inflammation characterized by collections of activated
macrophages, often with T lymphocytes, and sometimes
associated with central necrosis.
2. Granulomatous inflammation is a distinctive of chronic
inflammatory reaction
3. Granuloma is focus of chronic inflammation consisting of
macrophages that are transformed in epithelium-like cells,
surrounded by a collar of mononuclear leucocytes,
principally lymphocytes and occasionally plasm acells
CHRONIC INFLAMMATION MORPHOLOGY

1. Foreign granuloma --> are incited by

relatively inert foreign bodies

2. Immune granulomas --> are caused by a

variety of agents that are capable of
inducing a cell-mediated immune response
