THE U-TUBE

MANOMETER

BY: ATHARVA AND LILLIAN

THE U-TUBE MANOMETER

 A manometer is a device that is used to measure pressure. This results in the “U-tube manometer”.

 The tube is in a shape of a ‘U’, hence the name U-tube.

THE U-TUBE MANOMETER

 P1 is the pressure to be measured (e.g. Gas pressure).

 P2 is the atmospheric pressure (the air around us), acting on A.

 The U-tube has a density of p.

 The pressure difference is indicated by h, which shows the difference between the level of the
liquids.
 Notice that C and B are equal.

 We need to know that the downward pressure of P1, has to be equal to the downward
pressure, on the other side of the tube. This maintains equilibrium, in order for it to be
balanced.
THE U-TUBE MANOMETER

 Remember- since P1=the downward pressure on the other

side…
 This means that P1=the atmospheric pressure and the liquid
pressure.
 So the formula would be P1=P2 + hpg

 h = (height in metres)

 P= (density in kg/m3)
 By using this formula, we are able to calculate the totalpressure
g (gravity in N/kg).
