Aristotle, And Aristotle’s Model Of

Communication
History
Aristotle was born in Greece Stagira in 384 BC. He was a Greek
philosopher.
Aristotle covered a wide range of subjects, including biology,
zoology, music theatre, physics, politics, rhetoric, linguistics and
much more..
It is said of Aristotle that he was probably the last person to know
everything there was to be known in his own time.
Later on Aristotle was sent to Plato’s academy in Athens, where he
developed a closed relation with Plato that totally changed his
life.
He is then invited by the king Philip the 2 nd king of Macedonia, to
teach the Alexander the great..
Aristotle’s Model Of Communication
While exploring the human nature scientifically Aristotle
developed a linear model of communication. Known as
Aristotle model of communication, considered as the first
model of communication and was proposed before 300 BC

This model is a speaker centered model, as the

speaker has the most important role in it. It is speaker role to
influence the audience by delivering the speech. And the role
of audiences is passive. This model makes the communication
one way from speaker to receiver.
Critical Elements Of Good Communicator:

Aristotle has given 3 elements that must be presented in a good communicator

or public speaker. They reinforce the other 5 elements.

• Ethos:
Ethos is the characteristic which makes you credible in front of
the audience. If there is no credibility, audience will not believe in you
and will not be persuaded by you.
• Pathos:
If what you say matters the audience and they can connect with
it, then they will be more interested and they will think, you are more
credible.
• Logos:
logos is a logic. People believe in you only if they can understand
what you are trying to say. People find logic in everything , if there is no
logic behind speaker’s word, they do not want to get involved. Speaker
must present facts to the audience.

Rhetoric:
It is the art of discourse, art that aims to improve the capability of writer or
speaker to inform, most likely to persuade, or motivate audiences in specific
time.

According to Aristotle:
Aristotle believed “Rhetoric” is the study of communication and
persuasion, different messages or speeches should be made for
different audiences at different situations to get desired effect
or to establish a propaganda.
The speech must be clear as well as the speaker must have a very
good non-verbal communication with the audience like eye
contact.
According to Cicero:
“Rhetoric is the
art of speaking well”
Or
“Good man speaking well”

According to Quintilian:
Basically Quintilian followed Plato’s Rhetoric
theory. “The art of enchanting the soul”. (the
art of winning the soul by discourse)
