 What is it?
The Colombian Caribbean coast is known for its beaches, seas, gastronomy and its festivals,
where flavor and music are the main protagonists. The vallenato festival is one of the most
popular festivals in Colombia and, year after year, it attracts thousands of tourists who allow
themselves to be conquered by the joy of this Vallenata party.

The Vallenato Festival was born in 1968 as an initiative to protect the cultural and musical
heritage of Vallenato, incorporating not only the music but also the customs and traditions of
the coast that enrich the lyrics and melodies of one of the most representative musical genres
of Colombia. .

Over time, it has evolved. Initially, it was in charge of the Cesar Tourism Office, but since
1987 the Fundación Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata has been at the forefront of this
successful festival.

The national importance that the Vallenata Legend Festival has had since its creation is undeniable, not only due to
the presence of the President of the Republic and some members of the Ministerial Cabinet in its inauguration acts,
every year, but also because of the unusual success that vallenata music receives every day. About 400 journalists
representing an approximate number of 200 communication media from all over the country and some of an
international character participate in the coverage of this event.

The most important phonographic companies in the record market in the country also join the Festival by
presenting groups, mostly Vallenato music, thus enlivening the development of the contests during the 4 days and
nights of the contest.

In its 2019 edition, the festival has the slogan 'Vallenato para el mundo' which, according
to Rodolfo Molina Araújo, president of the Vallenata Legend Festival Foundation, “will
continue to allow thousands of national and foreign people to have Valledupar as a
musical and tourist destination ”.
