• The Tata Group's history with the Defence sector goes
back to the 1940s

• In the post-war years, JRD Tata saw the opportunity to

create an engineering giant the like of which the country
did not yet have.

• on September 1, 1945, Tata Locomotive and Engineering

Company was incorporated as a public limited company.

• On November 1 of that year, it received a certificate of

commencement to produce locomotives and boilers.
• Within one-and-a-half months of its birth “The company
was promoted to manufacture not only boilers and
locomotives but also heavy engineering equipment” such
as

• road rollers
• tractors
• earthmoving equipment
• diesel engines, etc.

• But, in view of the immediate post-war demand for the

former type of equipment, the Agents felt that it might
become necessary to commence the manufacture of such
equipment at an earlier stage.
• The Tata Group also developed a Wheeled
Armoured Carrier - Indian Pattern or ACV-IP,
better known as the 'Tatanagar'. (1947-2005)

• The group has contributed to serving India's

defence needs in the mobility segment
