ETHICS

WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT

DINESSA ANGELIQUE CORVERA

WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS’
RELATIONSHIP TO IT?

Philosophy literally means love of wisdom, the Greek words philia

meaning love or friendship, and sophia meaning wisdom.

Ethics, a branch of Philosophy, deals with what is right or wrong in

human behavior and conduct.

THE NATURE OF ETHICS

Ethics concerns itself in asking; what is good and

what is bad? Are there certain standards or guides
to what we ought to do or not to do? If indeed
there are, what are these standards and norms of
right and wrong?

THE NATURE OF ETHICS
ETHICS IS CRITICAL
Apart from being a particular type of philosophy, ethics can also be defined as a
critical, systematic, and reflective analysis of what makes an act good or bad. It tries
to do a reflective investigation into the basis of that assertion. It also inquires into the
meaning of the terms "good," "bad," "right," "wrong," "ought," and the like.

ETHICS IS PRACTICAL
Ethics as a practical science presents thoughts and ideas that are not just to be
known by the mind but to be acted upon in the realm of everyday life.

MORALITY

SCIENTIFIC, OR DESCRIPTIVE
APPROACH
The scientific approach is what often used in the social
sciences which deals with human behavior and conduct. The
emphasis here is empirical; that is, social scientists observe and
collect data about human behavior and conduct and then draw
certain conclusions. They make no value judgments about
what’s morally right or wrong, nor do they prescribe how
human ought to behave.

situation.

(2)The account of the relevant facts
(3)Practical conclusion

METAETHICS

Metaethics, also known as analytic ethics, is

derived from the Greek word meta meaning
beyond. Therefore, metaethics is a form of study
that is beyond the topics considered in normative
or applied ethics. Metaethics is the study of how
we engage in ethics.

METAETHICS

“In metaethics, we are concerned not with the

questions, which are the province of normative
ethics like ‘ Should I give to famine relief?’ or
‘Should I return the wallet I found in the street?’
but with questions about questions like these.”
