Definition and Purpose of Narrative Text
Definition
A narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people.

Purpose
To amuse or to entertain the reader with a story.
Generic Structure and Language Features of Narrative Text

Generic structure
Orientation: It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are
introduced.
Complication : Where the problems in the story developed
Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved
Coda/Re-orientation : Lesson from the story

Language Features
- Past Tense (killed, drunk, etc.) - Acton Verbs
- Adverb of Time (Once upon a day, one day, - Direct Speech. It is to make the story lively.

- Time Conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc.) White”). The direct speech uses present
- Specific Character (Cinderella, Snow White, tense.

Types of Narrative Text
Fiction

- Fable (Stories that teach a lesson, often using animal characters)


- Folk Tale (Old stories that reveal cultural customs)
- Fantasy (Fiction stories about unrealistic characters and events that would
never happen)
- Science Fiction (Fiction stories based on scientific fact)
- Horror (Fiction stories that are scary or horrific
- Legend (Stories based on fact, but with exaggeration about the hero)
- Myth (Ancient stories meant to explain nature or life)
- Plays (Stories in the form of dialogue, meant to be performed on the stag
e or in a movie)
- Short Stories (brief stories focusing on one character and event)
- Tall Tales (Humorous exaggeration stories focusing on a mythical hero)

Non-Fiction
- Biography (detailed accounts of someone’s life
- Epics (Lengthy stories of heroic exploits)
- Historical Fiction (Fiction stories set in the past, containing some true facts)
- Realistic Fiction (Stories whose characters and events could occur in real lif

Example of Narrative Text

Title The Rabbit and the Turtle

One day a rabbit was boasting about how fast he could run. He was
Orientation laughing at the turtle for being so slow.

Much to the rabbit’s surprise, the turtle challenged him to a race. The
rabbit thought this was a good joke and accepted the challenge. The

fox was to be the umpire of the race. As the race began, the rabbit
raced way ahead of the turtle, just like everyone thought.

The rabbit got to the halfway point and could not see the turtle
anywhere. He was hot and tired and decided to stop and take a short

nap. All this time the turtle kept walking step by step by step. He never
quit no matter how hot or tired he got. He just kept going.

However, the rabbit slept longer than he had thought and woke up. He
Coda/Re-orientation could not see the turtle anywhere! He went at full-speed to the finish
line but found the turtle there waiting for him.
