INTRODUCTION – 01
• Phenols are classified as harmful pollutants

Toxic non biodegradable

Adsorption is most widely used because it is

effective to removes many pollutants and
the process is simple.

The 3rd International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST 2017)

• Since the discovery of mesoporous silica materials in
the 1990s, the synthesis and application of mesoporous
solids have received intensive attention due to its highly
ordered structure, larger pore size, and high surface
area.
• The SBA-15 material is a meso-silica solid (2 - 50 nm)
that provides greater access to absorb water-phenol
molecules.
• Fe (Ferrum) are used to substitute
• Based on the description above, in a study article on the
mesoporous silica material SBA-15 (Fe2O3 / SBA-15)
with Fe as a lead metal for adsorption of phenol
molecules.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION – 01
1. Characterization of SBA-15 and Fe2O3/ SBA-15

a b

1a (large angle difractogram 10-80), 1b (small angle diffractogram) of

Fe, SBA-15 and Fe2O3/ SBA-15

The 3rd International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST 2017)

a. Fe2O3/SBA-15 shows three peaks on
reflections (0 1 2), (1 0 4) and (1 1 0) showing
similar mesoporous structures such as SBA-
15.

Typical Fe peak on XRD shows the presence

of hematite (Fe2O3) reinforced by EDAX
element distribution data
b. The graph overlaps in the range of 1-1.5 in 2Ө
between Fe, SBA-15 and Fe2O3/ SBA-15 material
which indicates that the addition of Fe metal on
SBA-15 silica is not much affecting the crystal
structure of SBA-15.
A slight peak shift in the diffractogram indicates
an increase in the distance between the crystal
plane and the unit cell parameters.
In the study there was a partial change of Si by Fe
on Fe2O3/SBA-15 adsorbent.

sylanol or OH group from adsorbed water molecules.
This is confirmed by the presence of absorption at
wavenumbers 1635 cm-1 shows the vibrations buckling-
OH from the Si-OH or H2O. At wavenumbers 1083 cm-1
with sharp intensity shows the vibration of asymmetric
Si-O output of siloxane Si-O-Si.
b. spectrum of SBA-15 represent the O-H vibrations at 3415
cm-1 which can be caused by the presence of a sylanol or
OH group from adsorbed water molecules. This is
confirmed by the presence of absorption at wavenumbers
1635 cm-1 shows the vibrations buckling-OH from the Si-

of siloxane Si-O-Si.
c. spectrum of Fe represent the O-H vibrations at
3320 cm-1 which can be caused by the presence of
a sylanol or OH group from adsorbed water

3. Adsorption of phenol on Fe2O3/SBA-15

Fig. 4. Adsorption isotherm of phenol on Fe2O3/SBA-15

The 3rd International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST 2017)

Figure 4 shows that phenol adsorption on
Fe2O3/SBA-15 has an equilibrium at minute 60
with a maximum adsorption capacity is about 210
mg/g. The results show that Fe2O3/SBA-15
material has great potential to be a phenol-
pollutant material. For future applications,
Fe2O3/SBA-15 is the forerunner of a good
catalyst.
CONCLUSIONS
 SBA-15 has been successfully combined with highly
magnetic Fe metal (Fe2O3/SBA-15)
 Fe2O3/SBA-15 with high purity, and crystalline is
obtained under XRD testing conditions in which the
crystal is hexagonal.
 An indication of the formation of Fe2O3/SBA-15 can be
seen in the EDAX characterization results wherein Fe
content in Fe2O3/SBA-15 adsorbent is 48.47 wt%.
 The functional groups associated with the adsorbent show
the Si-O-Si peak at 1083 cm-1, and the peak width of the
O-H group at 3443 cm-1.
 The optimum capacity of phenol adsorption achieved at
60 min, temperature 33˚C with initial concentration of 200
mgL-1 adsorbate.
