In the case of liquid substances coming out of the open container (tank) through a small hole sustu
located at a distance of h below the surface of the water, the pressure on the surface of the liquid
substance is equal to the pressure on the hole, and the downward speed of the liquid surface can be
ignored against the speed of fluid spray that is the smoothness of the hole.

In this case Bernoulli's equation becomes

This equation is called the Torricelli theorem. This equation is identic with that of an object falling free
from a height of h.
Fluid discharge that spouts
out of the hole and area A is
calculated by
Q=Av
Q=A
If the discharge of liquid substances is at a height (H - h)
above the ground, with H is the height of liquid
substances above the ground, then the farthest horizontal
distance that can be reached liquid substances can be
measured from the tank legs (point C) expressed by the
equation
Torricelli's theorem states that the speed
of a burst of water through a hole that is
h away from the water's surface is equal
to the speed of water-free fall from an h
height.
By applying the Bernoulli equation, then:

     = pressure at the end of the pipe (Pa)

    = density of fluid (kg/m3)
   = fluid flow speed (m/s)

   = acceleration of gravity (m/s2)
    = height (m)

Example question

a large tub filled with water and there was a faucet like a picture. If g = 10 ms-2,
then the speed of water bursts from the faucet is...

A. 3 ms-1
B. 8 ms-1
C. 9 ms-1
D. 30 ms-1
E. 900 ms-1
DISCUSSION

Known :

Height (h) = 85 cm – 40 cm = 45 cm = 0.45 meters

Gravitational acceleration (g) = 10 m/s

Asked : Speed of water burst from faucet (v)

answer :

Torricelli's theorem states that the speed of the water bursts through the hole that
is h away from the
water level equals the speed of water-free fall from a height of h.
Water burst speed is calculated using the formula of free fall motion vt

vt2 = 2 g h
vt2 = 2 g h = 2(10)(0,45) = 9
vt = √9 = 3 m/s

The correct answer is A.

Example question

A reservoir filled with water and a hole in the wall (see picture). The speed of water
when coming out of the hole is... (g = 10 ms-2
A. 12 ms-1
D. 5 ms-1
B. 10 ms-1
E. 2 ms-1
C. 6 ms -1
DISCUSSION

Known :

Height (h) = 1.5 m – 0.25 m = 1.25 meters

Gravitational acceleration (g) = 10 m/s2

Asked : Speed of water when coming out of the hole (v)

answer :

vt2 = 2 g h = 2(10)(1.25) = 25

vt = √25 = 5 m/s

The correct answer is D.
