INTRODUCTION

 Wrought iron is an iron alloy with a very low carbon content in

contrast to steel, and has fibrous inclusions, known as slag.
 This is what gives it a "grain" resembling wood, which is visible when it
is etched or bent to the point of failure.
 Wrought iron is the assumed approximately as purest iron which
possesses at least 99.5% iron.
 Wrought iron is tough, malleable, ductile and easily welded.

CHARACTERISTICS
 Tough, Ductile & Malleable

 Magnetic (Temporary only)

 Strong - high elasticity and tensile strength.

 Highly resistant against corrosion

 Becomes stronger the more it is worked.

 Suitable for members in tension or compression

 Cannot be adopted for making castings

 Its fracture shows fibrous break, if pulled apart.

manufacture

1. This iron is produced from cast iron by re-melting

and puddling it in the puddling furnace or air
furnace or reverberatory furnace to expose it to
oxygen.
The oxidised molten metal free from impurities is

removed from the furnace as a pasty mass of iron

and slag.
3. The balls of this pasty mass, each about 45 to 65 kg
in weight, are formed.
4. These balls are then mechanically worked to
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
1. welds better than steel does, 1. Its elastic and tensile
2. lasts longer when exposed to strength are lower than
weather or to water, those of steel,
3. resists shock and vibration 2. Its production is more
(fatigue) better, in use, costly.
4. Its fibrous structure arrests
fracture, as its breaking is in the
nature of a gradual tearing, which
often gives warning of a
dangerous stress, while steel
breaks suddenly.

WROUGHT IRON IN 21ST CENTURY
 The wrought is replaced to a very
great extent by mild steel.
 It is used where a tough
material is required.
 Used for rivets, chains, ornamental

 It is manufactured for steel, bolts
