Past simple

We use the past simple to describe a situation (an action, an event or a state)
which was true, or which happened at a particular time in the past. It
describes a situation which is not happening or not true right now.

I checked Sinta just before handover (this action is now


finished)

I had chemotherapy in 2009 (the patient finished the


chemo in that year)

He was in quite severe pain when he first arrived (it was


true at that time but perhaps it is not true now)
Past Continuous

We use the past continuous to talk about a past activity that was
in progress at a particular time in the past

at 8 am, i was eating breakfast


where were you last night? I was sleeping

We use the past simple and past continuous together to talk


about a completed past event that happened when another
activity was in progress.

It started to rain when I was walking on the street


I was watching TV when the phone rang
