Metal Container

Types of metal containers

Sanitary cans
Types of Metal Containers
• Sanitary Cans
• Steel drums
• Aluminum cans
• Composite cans
• Aluminum foils
Sanitary Cans (Tin Cans)

Material used
1. Steel sheets
2. Tin coating
3. Lacquers
1. Types of steel
Type L:
Used for strongly corrosive food e.g.
apple juice, cherries and pickles
 Type MR Steel:
Used for mildly acidic products such
as peach, grape fruit, corn and meat
Type MC Steel:
Used for low acidic food e.g. vegetables
Selection of Steel depend on
• Type of product
• Corrosive resistance

2. Tin Layer: (0.3-1.3 mm thick)

Thickness depend on
• Type of food
• Corrosive action
Electroplating
Definition
“ Process of plating one metal onto another
metal by hydrolysis”
Plating:
“Plating is a surface covering in which a metal is
deposited on a conductive surface”
*Normally electroplating is used for functional
properties and to prevent a metal from corrosion
How does electroplating works
• Electroplating works through an electrolytic
cell with a cathode and an anode
• The cathode is the metal that needs to be
plated
• The anode is the metal that is plated on other
method
Electroplating
• Metal to be plated (steel) connected to –ve terminal
and tin is connected to +ve terminal
• Both metals(steel and tin) immersed in a solution
contain electrolyte(SnCl) connect to external supply of
direct current
• When direct current power is applied ,anode is
oxidized and its metal atoms dissolve in electrolyte
solution
• These dissolve metal ions are reduced at cathode and
form coating
Purpose of electroplating:
• Improve metal corrosion resistance
Electrolyte used:
• Acids
• Bases
• Metal salts (tin chloride)
3. Lacquers
• Lacquers are used to preserve the taste and
prevent discoloration of food
Most common lacquers include
a. Oleoresin lacquers
b. Vinyl lacquers
c. Phenolic lacquers
d. Acrylic lacquers
e. Epoxy phenolic lacquers
Steps of canning
1. Cleaning
2. Filling
3. Exhausting
4. Sealing
5. Heat processing
6. Cooling
Exhaust box
Advantages
• Good heat conductor
• Can be subjected to thermal shocks
• Light in weight
• Chemically inert and lack of toxicity
• Available in number of shapes and sizes
• Resistance to physical damage
• Recyclable
• Excellent barrier against oxygen , moisture and light
Disadvantages
• Expensive due to high cost of metal
• May react with high acidic food
• High manufacturing cost
Faults
1. Critical faults
• Leakage
• Seaming compound missing
• Incomplete internal lacquers
• Seriously dented flanges
• Contamination of interior surface
2.Major Faults
• Dents are 2.5 cm long
• Out of round shape
• Loose solder in cans
3. Minor Faults
• Dents less than 2.5 cm
• Scratches on the surface
Steel Drum
There are 2 types of drums
1. Open head drum
2. Closed head drum
Uses of drums
• Pulp
• Milk
• Spices
• Sauces
• Sugar
• Ketchup etc
Capacity of steel drum
• Drum capacity varies by manufacturer and
purpose of usage
• Size varies i.e. 10-250L
• It is available in different shapes like square
and round
Critical Defects
• Don’t use poisonous drum for food
• Lining of drums must be food grade
• No leakage
Major defects
• Lid must be sealed
• No internal rusting
Minor defect
• Small size dents
Wood
Types of wood
1. Soft wood (Scolspino, Fir and larch)
2. hard wood (chestnut, Birch and Acacia)
Uses
Wood packaging is used to
• Pack
• Transport
• Handle
• Present the fruits
Wood packaging designs
Boxes and crates
• Important for fresh fruits and vegetables
• To hold the food together and protect from
crushing
Drum and barrels
• Mainly used for wines
• Transfer the flavor of wood to produce
improved flavor
Pallets
• Mainly used for stacking, load cartons and box
packs to move them from production area to
warehouses
Trays and baskets
• Used to display the fruits and vegetables
Dunnage
• Loose wood
• Not used as packaging
• Used to protect the goods in packing
Advantages
• Durable
• Reusable
• Recyclable
• Corrosion free
• Available in different designs
• Readily available and cheap
• Stackable
• Ecofriendly
• Easily constructed by hand
• Not require too much cost for conversion or expenditure on
equipment
