INDEPENDENT AND
DEPENDENT SAMPLES
In this chapter, you will learn how to test a claim comparing parameters from two
populations.
Before learning how to test the difference between two parameters, you need to
understand the distinction between independent samples and dependent samples.

MEANS Rejection Region or Critical Value Approach
Basic steps:
1. State the hypothesis
2. Find the significance
level (and the critical
value, z-crit or t-crit)

3. Find the test statistics (z-

stat or t-stat)

4. Make a decision of
“reject H0” or “fail to
reject H0”
5. Draw conclusion

TESTING FOR THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEAN
(DEPENDENT SAMPLES)
To perform a two-sample hypothesis test with dependent samples, you will use a
different technique. You will first find the difference d for each data pair.

These conditions are necessary to conduct the test.

1. The samples are randomly selected.
2. The samples are dependent (paired).
3. The populations are normally distributed or the number n of pairs of data is at
least 30.
