Acknowledgement
I would like to express my gratitude to my teacher,
Mrs.Warmington-Williams for her assistance and guidance in
completing this project. I've been taught a lot more about
nutritional disorders, which will be very useful to me. I want to
thank my parents at the end of the day. I couldn't have completed
this project without them.
Introduction
Unsuitable nutrient intake in the
Caribbean can result in a deficiency
disease or an increased supply in the
diet. Both can result in a variety of
health problems. Nutrients are
substances that provide nourishment
necessary for life's maintenance and
growth. Deficiency diseases are caused
by a lack of essential nutrients or
dietary elements in the body, such as
vitamins and minerals. Although a
deficiency disease for some nutrients is
extremely unlikely, deficiency diseases
for vitamins and minerals are the most
common.
Kwashiorkor
Kwashiorkor is a disease caused by a severe lack of protein in
diets that contain calories mainly from carbohydrates such as
yams, rice, and bananas. It usually affects older children. People
with kwashiorkor often seem to have swollen abdominal areas
due to fluid retention. Signs of Kwashiorkor are body weight
being less than 60% of the normal, dependent edema is present,
and skin and hair changes. Other common symptoms of
Kwashiorkor include fatigue, irritability, diarrhea, retarded
growth, and impaired cognition and mental health.

Dental Caries
Dental caries, also called enamel decay, is the result of a
microorganism in the oral cavity. It can be described due to tooth
decay acids that are generated with the use of microorganisms.
Sugar can also put you at risk of tooth decay. A close symptom of
tooth decay is a whitish stain on the floor of the tooth enamel.
This white pot will later turn into a shiny brown lesion. This is an
indication of demineralization of the teeth. Toothaches during
eating, sensitivity to enamel, visible holes or pits in the tooth, and
halitosis (bad breath) are signs of Dental Caries. Dental Caries is
a product of excessive Carbohydrates.

Obesity
Obesity, also called corpulence or fatness is a excessive
accumulation of body fat, usually caused by the consumption of
more calories than the body can use. Individuals who consume
high-fat diets regularly are likely to exceed their energy needs
and gain weight, especially since fat contributes more than twice
as many kilocalories per gram as protein or carbohydrates.
Symptoms of obesity can negatively impact one’s daily life,
frequent symptoms include: early puberty in girls/delayed
puberty in boys, shortness of breath, sweating (more than usual),
snoring, trouble sleeping, and skin problems (from moisture
accumulating in the folds of skin).Obesity is caused by excessive
amounts of fat.

Beri-Beri
Beri-Beri is a condition that occurs in people who are deficient in
thiamine (vitamin B1). There are two types of the disease: wet
beriberi and dry beriberi. Wet beriberi affects the heart and
circulatory system. In extreme cases, wet beriberi can cause heart
failure. Dry beriberi damages the nerves and can lead to
decreased muscle strength and eventually, muscle paralysis. A
patient with Beri-Beri becomes exhausted and loses weight;
muscles become weak, especially in the legs; ankles and wrists
drop. Fluid may be retained in the tissues, causing swelling.

Iron Deficiency Anemia
Iron deficiency anemia occurs in people who are iron deficient.
Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red
blood cells to carry enough oxygen to your body tissues.
Symptoms of anemia include tiredness, weakness, muscle pain,
and a dull complexion. Iron deficiencies include brittle or spoon-
shaped nails and possible hair loss. You may find that your sense
of taste has changed or that there is ringing in your ears.

Dehydration
Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluids than you
absorb and your body does not have enough water and other
fluids to perform its normal functions. Dehydration can
adversely affect the functioning of the body by causing an
electrolyte imbalance. Signs and symptoms of dehydration
consist of: dizziness and headache, dry mouth and bad breath, a
sudden craving for food and constipation.
