Reading is one of the most important
academic tasks faced by students , it is
equally important in the commerical
working world.

Purpose of reading
The purpose of reading is to connect the
ideas on the page to what you already
know.
If you don’t know about the topic or
subject , then pouring words of text into
your mind is like pouring water in your
hand.

Purpose of reading
During , listening or reading you need to
be alert and grasp the message quickly.
On the purpose of speed reading time is
significant compared to the time needed
to comprehension the reading.
Speed reading tips
 1) look for titles , headings & subheadings.
 2) pick out topic sentences.
 3) utilize graphs ,charts & diagrams.
 4) take notes while or just after you read.
 5) try to understand those words which meaning is hard
for you.
 6) also underline those words whose meaning is hard for
you.
 7) before reading any topic , you should know the
primary information about that topic.
 8) you should do SCANNING & SKIMMING.
Skimming
It is used to immediately recognize the
main ideas of text.
Skimming is done at a speed three to four
times faster than normal reading.
People often use this technique when they
have lots of material to read in a limited
period.
This technique is useful when you look
for specific information.
 Example of skimming

If your sir/mam want to complete any chapter

in limited time , they should do this.
Scanning
This technique you often use when you
are , looking up a word in the telephone
book.
In short , scanning is moving your eyes
quickly down the page.
Example of scanning
Ifyou want to sell your shares , you
should find the your company in which
you are interested , then you should do
scanning on your monitor screen.
Tips for improving the reading skills
1) devlop your interest in world events.
2) look for hard words in such
dictionaries.
3) read the magazines , news papers &
paragraphs.
4) ask questions , discuss ideas with your
friends.
5) study the pictures ,graphs ,charts.
6) read dictionary regurarly.
