The Difference b/n Research Paper
and Review Paper
BY Abreham Dereje
What is Research Paper?
 Research paper is must be based on analysis and interpretation of
original data from the research study. It purpose is to report a
detailed description of the original research study that is unique and
specific to a subject.
 It must always be based on original research work and must be the
primary reference source on the topic or primary literature b/c
based on experimental profound work.
 Detailed report of original research study.
 It reports every step undertaken for the study and include an
abstract, well-crafted hypothesis, its background studies, all
methodology, conclusion and explanation of the findings
A Research Paper can be two main types:
1. Argumentative- in this research paper, an individual has to state the topic he
or she will be exploring and then directly establish the point he or she will
argue concerning that topic in a thesis statement. This type of paper hopes to
influence the reader to accept the view that is presented.
2. Analytical- it is typically in the form of a question, originally taking an
unbiased stance. The main body of the paper will present many-sided
information and, eventually, the writer will state his or her conclusion, based
on the information that has stretched out all through the course of the essay. So
generally analytical papers create a balanced, neutral approach to presenting a
snapshot of an overall topic from which you draw conclusions,
and argumentative papers create a debate between differing sides with a
logical argument that favors one side of an argument over another
What is Review Paper?
It must always be based upon published scholarly literature and
contain no new information on the topic.
 Discus available information and, report problem/gap in the
literature.
 Secondary literature b/c based on already published work.
 It reports commonalities among various research on the topic
and the discrepancies with reasons for conflicting or varying
results
 These contain simple and compact summary of the original
research paper and should act as an overview on the topic
Review paper can be three types ………
1. Narrative review – it explains the existing information about all the
research that has been done on a particular topic.
2. Systematic review- it searches for the answer to a particular question in the
existing research on the topic.
3. Meta-analysis- it combines and compares the answers of formerly
published studies. Simply put, a systematic review refers to the entire
process of selecting, evaluating, and synthesizing all available evidence,
while the term meta-analysis refers to the statistical approach to combining
the data derived from a systematic-review
By reading a review paper, readers can form an idea about the existing
knowledge of a topic without reading all the published works.
